No, you're not having the same problem as those above: your noise margin has increased markedly which strongly suggests that your router sync speed has been capped (reduced) by Sky - posting your router stats would help confirm this.

Other posters above are having different problems: one (alanskyuser) looks like a wireless interference problem, the other (homerjay) looks like a line fault. Both of these problems could easily be down to something like Christmas lights (as an example).

All the clues are in the router and speedtest stats.

      whats going on?
Although the noise margin looks low the router shows WAN uptime of over 61 hours so this is not causing disconnections. The WLAN uptime is only 5 minutes so I would suspect a wireless interference problem here. Possibly a neighbour on the same channel.

If he's only had Max for 2 weeks then I'd guess he has one of the new routers. Their firmware (unlike the V1) will reliably hold a connection at a noise margin far lower than the old firmware - down to 0db reportedly. Whilst the connection might hold, a low noise margin will almost certainly be causing line errors and hence data retransmissions (and therefore slower download speeds).

The other notable feature of the new firmware is that it handles line problems a little better and the noise margin swings through the day tend to be much smaller. To have dropped to only 3db suggests a line problem as the root cause.

Of course, as you say, if he's is also wireless (I couldn't see a reference to this) then that may well be adding considerably to the low download speed problem.

      Re: Speed capping?

Yep - as I said before, you've been capped.

Call Sky, go through the T1 "slow speed" trouble shooting (don't say anything about capping or your sync speed) and get through to CST. They can see your current line condition (errors) and may well be able to completely uncap you. If so your downstream sync will rise to around 15000kbps and your upstream to 768kbps.

Said that he surprised it work as there system normally good at working out best speed. Everything now working better beliow is stat i have now. It would sync at 16mb but with errors so limited to 15mb

      Re: Speed capping?

I think I may have a similar problem. Before Christmas I always had a 15mbps connection, now all of a sudden I get 8.5mbps at most.

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 8408 kbps 764 kbps
Line Attenuation 36.0 db 20.3 db
Noise Margin 7.2 db 13.5 db

Have I been capped? Or something up with the line?

The router has a target noise margin of 6.9 db so at 7.2 db that does not look like a cap. Something must have changed with your line - any new devices plugged in or anything not connected via an ADSL filter?

Hav you tried the test socket behind the master faceplate? Compare the noise margin from there with your extensions disconnected which may give you a clue.
