      Seriously Slow!!

      Hi All,

I was wondering if anyone could offer any advice...recently changed from BT to Sky broadband and have had nothing but problems since it was set up. The main issue is that all websites seem to load at a speed as slow as dial up. Im not too sure if its something to do with windows vista or internet explorer but when trying to access certain websites or clicking on links within a website it just seems to hang and think about it for about 20 seconds, and more often than not the connection with completely be lost. When i reboot the router I get a message next to the router icon stating local access only etc. My router stats are as follows:

Port Status TxPkts RxPkts Collisions Tx B/s Rx B/s Up Time
      WAN PPPoA 10553 13544 0 413 1819 01:10:42
      LAN 100M/Full 599 0 0 24 0 01:12:52
      WLAN 11M/54M 17599 14288 0 2116 490 01:12:39
      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 6400 kbps 416 kbps
Line Attenuation 26 db 6.5 db
Noise Margin 5 db 14 db

Is there anything I could do to reslove this issue as the internet worked perfectly whilst I was with BT....any info would be very much appreciated....

      Thanks a lot

      Kathryn

      first questions...

      are you wireless?
are you running off an extention?

Thanks, yes running a wireless connection on windows vista. The router is connected directly into the main line and through no extensions

      Re: Seriously Slow!!

best thing is to try a wired connection if possible as its more than likely a wireless issue...

OR, if you have one, try the router in the test socket as you should get the full 8Mbps quite easily with that attenuation level

      Re: Seriously Slow!!

ok thanks for that - the connection does seem a lot better using a wired connection - do you know of any ways to correct the wireless issue by any chance?

      Re: Seriously Slow!!

IF you have a router which was working fine you can set it up as a wireless access point by hooking it to the Sky router via ethernet - not 100% how to do it though

I am not so sure it is a just a wireless issue with this low noise margin. There could be a line/wiring issue as well which may well not have shown up on say a BT 2Mb connection.

It might we worth looking behind the master socket for the dreaded orange/white ring wire connected to terminal 3 and disconnecting it.

      Re: Seriously Slow!!

Yeah, that's a low sync speed and noise margin for a line with a downstream attenuation of 26dB - should be getting the full 8Mbit with a comfortable noise margin really.

Like eyemdee says, if there are telephone extensions wired into the master socket (as opposed to plugged in extensions) then removing the ring wire will make a big difference. If the extensions are the "plug-in" kind, then putting a microfilter into the master socket first and then plugging the extensions into that may improve things.

But the best solution is to fit an ADSL splitter faceplate (such as the ADSLnation XTE-2005).

      Re: Seriously Slow!!

^^^ Not quite - there can be extensions wired to the master socket but not being used by the router or anything else for that matter. That ring wire still acts as an aerial for line interference.
