Please help - constantly losing connection!

      Hi

I've been subscribing to Sky Max for around 12 months. I had huge problems with my connection dropping out for months before sky capped my speed. This is the post from then:

      Connection Problem - Please Help

After the cap, my connection improved - I was only having to re-boot the modem every few days. Just recently though (for about the past month) my internet is constantly disconnecting again - sometimes when I'm using it, and sometimes when I've left my pc off & go back to it. Sometimes my connection only lasts for a few minutes, sometimes a few hours.

My set-up is, netgear router plugged into the test socket. The modem directly next to the test socket & an ethanet cable to my pc. All of the filters have been changed, the cables have been changed - I've even formatted the pc!

      My stats right now are:

      System Up Time 01:08:46
Port Status TxPkts RxPkts Collisions Tx B/s Rx B/s Up Time
      WAN PPPoA 10540 13368 0 690 3333 01:07:09
      LAN 10M/100M 13732 10888 0 3337 739 01:08:45
      WLAN 11M/54M 75 0 0 3 0 01:08:35

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 3072 kbps 256 kbps
Line Attenuation 59.0 db 31.5 db
Noise Margin 5.3 db 13.0 db

Please help as Sky don't seem to know what's happening & I don't really want them to cap my speed any further!

      Thanks.

Yes - if that means the usual cables on telegraph poles?

Even so, would it really completely ruin my connection to this extend for such a long period? I've never experienced this with any other ISP's, and have had no known problems with my line.

Re: Please help - constantly losing connection!

PS - I've just completed the speed test in your reply & downloaded the 5MB file in 9 secs & used DSL ZoneUK - broadband for everyone to find out that I am 4.9km from my exchange (as the crow flies).

I've also just used kitz.co.uk and got the following:

      BT Exchange Information
      Exchange: Balby. BT Code: SLBAL
Location: St Johns Road, DN4 0QL.
      ADSL enabled : September 23, 2003
dsl Max enabled: March 30, 2006
      SDSL enabled : Not Enabled
      21CN due : 2011
      Distance:- Direct: 4.9 km
      (appx)* By Road: 6.12 km

BT Line Speed Estimation Other Broadband Technology & LLU Providers

Fixed ADSL: 1024 kbps (1 Mb)
      DSL Max : 500 kbps (0.5 Mb)

Does this mean that I'm still connecting too fast? I read it that I should only be able to connect at 1MBPS?

      Thanks

Re: Please help - constantly losing connection!

I notice from your previous post that it is dated almost exactly 12 months ago. This would seem to support the previous posters comment that it could be seasonal. You may just be one of the few who's line is badly effected by the seasons.

Maybe if you post your detailed stats, using Mosseywell or Mognuts utilities', someone may get a better insight into what is happening.

Thanks. This is the detailed info from Moguts. Will it help if I rune this again next time my connection drops?

Re: Please help - constantly losing connection!

from reading your last (years) post, you looked like you had been capped at 1meg and had a noise margin in the high 20's

      looking at your new stats
Connection Speed 3072 kbps 256 kbps
Line Attenuation 59.0 db 31.5 db
Noise Margin 5.3 db 13.0 db
you seem to have been uncapped, i am not sure if you had followed saturdays advice about being uncapped and looking after the connection your self (using mognuts utility to increase)

Re: Please help - constantly losing connection!

It will not help to post after your connection drops as this will just show a clean sheet. I know it is a hassle but taking your stats every hour or so until it drops may tell more. You are already showing a lot of errors for the short time you have been running. As richone says, it looks like your previous cap has been lifted.

Re: Please help - constantly losing connection!

They did cap me at 1mb while investigating, & then changed it to 3mb. I left it at that as the problem was significantly better - until now!

Also, when I looked on the internet for my maximum recomended connection speed at the time, it said 3mb - now it says 1mb. Is it possible that this has gone down recently, so I'm now connecting too fast again?
