      Problems downloading from Rapidshare.com

Is anyone else having problems downloading from Rapidshare.com on their Sky connection??

It keeps on timing out - when I try to download anything....As a test I put in a proxy to test and low and behold the download worked!

When I phoned Sky to see what the problem was - they quite bluntly said that their wasn't a problem! when I told them that it works going through a proxy, they didn't have an answer for me.

Is anyone else having the same problems???

one, Sky don't use proxies so they wouldnt have a clue...

two, why use rapidshare, its rubbish!!! use YouSendIt instead, much more reliable...

Sky don't have a dedicated connection to every IP network in the world. They have connections to a selection of different companies, who in turn have connections to other companies, and so on. Hopefully, they pick the right number and combination of these "peers" as they're called, to offer a route through to every system on the net, either directly or indirectly. This is, in fact, how every ISP in the world works.

The problem is that sometimes these connections stop working, and it may not be the first hop (from Sky to one of its peers) that has failed, but one of the hops further down. In a sense, this is Sky's problem, because they have a responsibility to use a broad enough spread of peers such that you can connect to any site in the world, but in another sense, it's really the fault of some company further down the line.

At the end of the day, this is the nature of the Internet. The fact that you can get a connection through a proxy server doesn't prove that there's a fault with Sky's network. Although it must be said that not being able to access rapidshare is something that crops up quite frequently.

You could also argue that it's rapidshare's problem, in not connecting to a sufficiently wide spread of ISPs to ensure reliable connectivity.
