      Problem with interference (apparently)

I've been on Sky broadband for about 12 months now. The last few months have been terrible - the connection is constantly dropping, sometimes for a few seconds, sometimes for minutes. (Curiously though, sometimes if I'm listening to the radio on the web it continues to play). This has been happening with a wired desktop PC and my wireless laptop.

Sky have been woeful in their support however they did send me a new router the other day (a black one which looks a bit like the new Sky digibox). It has made no difference whatsoever (although as an aside the wireless connection is not so good).

I have removed all unnecessary wiring from my master socket - including the orange/white ring wire. There are no extensions plugged in and everything is filtered.

I rang Sky to a couple of days ago and they say there is nothing they can do but the bloke on the phone did say he could see I was suffering "massive interference" on the line. He could apparently monitor it as I was speaking to him and the connection was dropping. There is no obvious pattern to this, and it doesn't seem to coincide with any events like fridges or microwaves switching. Ths green "i" light on the router constantly flickers at a high rate but never seems to actually go out or turn amber.

I'm not clear on what statistics from my router may help with any analysis but when I enter 192.168.0.1 I get data which includes the following:

      Connection Speed 2048 kbps 320kbps
Line Attenuation 15 db 4 db
Noise Margin 31 db 14 db

I'm at a loss to explain the cause - at the end of my tether really - and would appreciate any advice. Thanks in advance.

can you here noise on your phone line when making a call ?
also does it do the same thing when you use the test socket and noting else plugged in except your router ?

      The phone always works perfectly.

I don't have a test socket. I have been using a Commtel integral broadband filter for 12 months (has a phone and broadband out). I recently changed it to a different plate (no test socket). Still no joy. Presently the only wires connected are the blue/white (to 2) and white/blue (to 5). No wired extensions, and the Sky boxes unplugged.

i am supprised you cannot hear any noise !
with your noise margin you should not be getting any errors, so to still be getting errors you must have a very bad line

have you done a quite line test (1701 option 1 i think)

Maybe if you can post your full detailed stats (link below) someone may get a clue to what is going on. You will have to run for a few hours before aking them. Can you also confirm that you are on a Base package, this would account for the high noise margin as you will be heavily capped. If your attenuation is correct you must be very close to the exchange.

Edit - Quiet line test is 17070 option 2

      Re: Problem with interference (apparently)

Thanks. I've done the quiet line test - all seems quiet - even though the connection is up and down even as I'm typing this. I am close to the exchange I believe (maybe 0.25 mile away - Sky told me I could get 15mb if I wanted?). I'm on the free package that you get with subscribing to Sky TV.

I had to put the old router back on since as far as I can see the tests will only work on that one. These are the results:

      Re: Problem with interference (apparently)

could you post some updated stats later today (to see how bad your errors get)
are you sure that someone is not using your wireless ? (you said earlier you get drop outs but your router light still flashes green, this is normal and just shows data is being transfered)

Hmm, is there a way of telling? I doubt there is though.

      Re: Problem with interference (apparently)

your router seems perfect. your line supports 10mbit, and even at 2 you are getting no errors

its either a faulty router, or, more likely, the wireless card/drivers/the pc
