Re: Problem from pc to router

Did have a friends laptop into which I reinstalled Windows Xp and the same occured with it.
If it were not for this statement I would suspect a faulty network adapter, but this would seem to rule that out. However there is always a chance that your friend's PC was also faulty, so it may be worth uninstalling the network adapter and reinstall it using the latest drivers. Is there any chance of borrowing a USB adapter from a friend, just to check. I assume you use a full version of XP and not a 'cut down' one like Nlite?

You could also try going to the LAN properties and untick everything except the TCP/IP protocol. Don't remove them, just take the tick out of the box.

Although the fault is also showing in Linux, which is why I suspected the adapter, it is still worth running TCP Optimiser. XP is very poorly optimised for broadband.

If you are not using the wireless connection, turn it off. I don't know if it is normal to be receiving packets when it is not being used, but obviously it is.

One thing seems to be sure, the problem is between your PC and the router, Sky appear to be delivering the maximum speed for your package.

Finally, is there any possibility of borrowing a friends machine, which is known to work correctly on another Broadband connection?

Not so much as a bit of advice but more a thought, id it at all possible that the problem is down to a dodgy port on Sky's equipment which oddly still allows a good sync?

It's about logical evaluation of the problem. The OP had already tried Linux and got slow speeds with that too, indicating that the problem wasn't with his Windows setup.

I notice that the WAN uptime is much shorter than the router uptime - 5 hours as against 51 hours. That shows that the connection dropped at some point. Now that could be nothing, or it could mean that, despite the apparently good stats, there is some kind of issue with the ADSL connection. If only there were some way of getting the error statistics on this connection - that would be a start.

Re: Problem from pc to router

ok, so back online - replaced my ethernet adaptor, assuming it may be the problem - no luck.

However spoke once more to Tier 3, and they have requested BT change the port at the exchange. Sky called to say they'll do this on Xmas eve. All Santa jokes are barred.

Untill then I don't see any way forward, barring looking at the new config of the new 10/10/1000 pci card. I may post a screen shot of the advanced screen for comments - will report back. PS have used tcpoptimiser - nothing good to report.

      Yes have full XP Pro.

Can I thank all of you for the attention you have given so far - very much appreciated, and yet another demo of the power of the net - well done all.

I see someone else is thinking along the same lines as me (Doesnt make me any the wiser though lol), or was this and actioned induced by yourself as apposed to the T3 tech thinking about it?
