      Speed dropped almost magically!!

Hi guys after a year of trouble free broadband on Sky's MAX package thanks to the legendry Wheelie and Hornet my download speeds have dropped to dangerously low levels to what i normally get.

      Heres my router stats:
      Down Up
Connection Speed 9997 kbps 764 kbps
Line Attenuation 25.0 db 13.2 db
Noise Margin 15.5 db 13.0 db

Pretty avg for 16MB but the download speeds are not what they used to be, just done a BBMAX speed test and got a downlad speed of 500kb/s. Internet pages are loading slowly streaming videos have become v.choppy. Any advice for a Sky Broadband Veteran guys?

further kick in the gonads, jst done a speedtest.net one and got the following:

      Yes i know, shocking!

      Re: Speed dropped almost magically!!

No obvious problems in your stats other than that you are capped at 9997kbps.

How is your router is connected to the phone socket and the PC to the router?

There are many possible reasons you may be getting a low download speed. In order of likelihood:
      • you are connecting wirelessly (try wired)
      • you are using an overloaded test server (probably not in this case but try Skyuser's)
      • your TCP/IP settings are incorrect (run TCPOptimizer)
      • you have a "benign" app running using bandwidth (e.g. Sky Anytime, BBCi etc)
      • someone else is using your bandwidth (e.g. someone on the LAN or rarely a wireless hijack)
      • you have malware on your system (run an on-line checker such as f-secure or Panda)

I am connected wirelessly but pretty much the same problem downstairs mate. Should i be expecting a drop in connection speed by that magnitude simply from using a wireless connection?

Yes, wireless is very susceptible to outside interference. Could be something in your house (e.g. Christmas lights or even your neighbour's Christmas lights), or maybe a neighbour's router transmitting on the same channel.

      How/why did you get capped?

Capped? I didnt know i was capped! I swear that last week my download speeds and general page loading was excellent this week its been terrible. You reckon i should just wait it out im probably going to be on the phone for up to an hour at national rate if i call sky up. Any other suggestions other that going wired because that isnt really an option, well not a practical one.

      Re: Speed dropped almost magically!!

It's your sync speed which has been capped not your download speed.

Uncapped you would sync at ~16meg.

First run the connection wired to see if it is a wireless issue. If it is then first thing to try would be to experiment with different wireless channels, make sure your router is well away from any electrical devices, baby monitors, dect phones etc (and turn off your Christmas lights if you have them up yet).

If still no good and wired isn't possible then you could use powerline connection but that's going to cost you ~100.

If it's not a wireless issue then work your way down the list I gave you.

Once you are sorted, call Sky and get uncapped.

My speeds have dropped dramatically this week too, caleld up Sky on Sunday as I was getting constant disconnections and they told me their servers have been down. I suppose it explains a lot.

There have also been a number of exchange issues during the week and a problem with some customer on the Connect service. Yes sometimes the "servers are down" option is just an excuse but sometimes it's true.
