Major Speed Problems with Sky 8Mb Connection

I have now been connected to Sky for 5 weeks.

I signed up for 8mb connection and have linked all the hardware in as requested.
Phone Socket - Extension to PC room - Filter - Router - PC.

      The router stats states
      DownStream Connection Speed 7648 kbps
      UpStream Connection Speed 448 kbps

Now i can connect no problem, however, my connection has yet to reach anywhere near 500kbps. Its usally between 300 and 400. This means i wait an age to open simple pages. Surely i should get more than a 16th of the connection speed! (This is even at 3am)

I have spoke to sky and ran all sorts of experiments. Including
      1. Filter Change = Failed
      2. Cable Change = Failed
      3. Removing extension and connecting directly = Failed
      4. Check cmd netstat = detected
      5. Checked router stats = As above.

I am based in the uk, in kent Dover (Ct16)

I have losing my mind over this. Anyone have any suggestions? I used to be ntl on a 2mb connection and it was so much faster. So i know my pc and gear is fine.

      Regards
      Rivets

Re: Major Speed Problems with Sky 8Mb Connection

      Hey thanx for your reply

So if i need to connect from an alternative room, what cable can i run over the distance? Sky had recommended I buy the extension i am using. I have a good mind to charge them for it, if they have told me wrong.
Do i need a 5 meter ethernet cable?
I do not want a wireless network. Trying to avoid that hassle.

Re: Major Speed Problems with Sky 8Mb Connection

yes ethernet is what Sky (should've) meant - they can be upto 100m long and won't lose signal strength. whereas a phone extention will (usually) get worse the longer it is...

so long as the filter is in the socket first and everything else running off that (phone/TV/etc) then it should be fine...

just as a note you look like you are on connect (re-branded BT service) which is contended/throttled - you may not get the full d/l (as per router stats) but should get better than you have now

Re: Major Speed Problems with Sky 8Mb Connection

Well, i managed to obtain a 10m ethernet cable today and have wired it in. I ran the speed checker from this site and it once again never went beyond 400kbps for my 8mb connection. So this ethernet cable has made not one iota of difference. I am now out of pocket and still no better off.

So now i am set with: -
Phone Socket - Filter - Router (Next to phone socket and filter) - Ethernet cable (10ms off) and into PC.

Checking the router stats its still claimning

      DownStream Connection Speed 7648 kbps
      UpStream Connection Speed 448 kbps

The only remaining thing i can consider is the BT line. The actual socket in place (Its a new house and the previous owners used it) it an old Telecom socket marked with a 'T', could this be the issue?

Re: Major Speed Problems with Sky 8Mb Connection

Have you looked at you router stats (e.g. by using the utility at Sky Netgear DG834GT utility version 0.4 ) - it could be that you are getting a very high rate of errors ?

If the error rate is high (say more than 5%) then using the same utility you could force the SNR margin to be higher (say 10db) and then the router would connect at a lower sync speed and you should find the error rate is lower and then actual usable speed is much better.

(I have had to do this for myself - I can sync at 8000 but in the evening the noise margin drops, the error rate increases and then browsing become sluggish)
