this way you can rule out if the wireless part is causing the slowdown or not,
then you can work on this issue when the problem is figured out.
      hi vishal

the router and bt master socket are in the garage - short of moving the pc in there a wired connection is not poss - although this may be the only option to fully test - before i uproot i would like to know if anyone has any more ideas.

Interestingly the router stats at the moment are:

Connection Speed 3831 kbps 766 kbps
Line Attenuation 39.5 db 24.9 db
Noise Margin 26.6 db 11.9 db

what sort of speeds might one expect with these figures?

Try a tool like TCP Optimizer at http://www.speedguide.net/downloads.php and use optimal settings and drag the slider to your current sync rate. Apply the setting and reboot, it makes a back up of your existing setting so you can revert back if you wish.

I am patiently waiting for an activation date, 3 weeks and counting.....

boab2791 - Thanks mate that made a dramatic improvement in my speed. downloading 1300kb/s now. (Now that's what I call fast).

      Hi,

I had very similar problems to you.

If you find your speed drops again, try rebooting your router.

Unfortunately, my feeling is that the netgear router is prone to crashes and losing sync etc and using a more reliable 3rd party router is the way forward.

What do people think about using a 3rd party router once passwords/usernames are obtained from the sky router using vishal's technique?

Sky can't really throw you off the service if you do this can they?

      Thanks

My router was saying I had a download speed of 15,323 kbps, but checking it using www.speedtest.com, I was getting between 8 meg and 49k download speed.

I spoke to Sky's tier 3 support and after some discussions they lower my capped speed to 13,981 kbps and I now seem more stable at between 6 and 8 meg.

Still not 16meg, so some more work needs to be done.

      Hope this helps.

      Keith
