Sorry I wasn't sure what you meant. Yep the phone works fine when plugged into the master socket when it's hanging off the wall, but no other socket in the apartment does. In this state, the test socket doesn't work either. Does that indicate it may be a problem with both the BT wiring and the one in my apartment?

This means it is incorrectly wired, it should not work at all. (Unless there is another Master socket somewhere and the one you have found is simply a slave). You should get it fixed asap. If it was like this when you moved in, BT are unlikely to charge you, but you should get this confirmed.

Having problems posting, the Forum seems to be down. Will keep trying

The incoming line has been wired to where the extensions should be wired, and the extensions must be connected to where the incoming line should be wired on the back of the master if they work with the faceplate fitted!

Definitely an amateur job and not as it should be but will work after a fashion with the faceplate fitted, albeit with no test socket facility.

      Re: Slow download on Connect/Mid

Ahh cheers guys! I am hoping the BT guy will know exactly what is wrong tomorrow morning, when he comes to fix it. Do you think that is why my internet may be going slowly? I hope it fixes it.

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 5984 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 22.0 db 14.5 db
Noise Margin 5.6 db 25.0 db

Also guys, how do I tell if i've been transferred onto the mid package without calling sky?

99% sure, it is having some detrimental effect.

I'm not so sure, as with the faceplate fitted everything should be electrically correct but just wired back to front! I think A & B connect directly to 5 & 2 through the test socket? I am interested to hear the outcome of this one!

      Re: Slow download on Connect/Mid

^^^ I agree with this. A is directly connected to 5 and B is directly connected to 2. When wired correctly, the master socket circuitry has a surge protector connected across wires A and B, and a capacitor and a resistor which provide the ring signal on terminal 3 and close the circuit between wires A and B which allows BT to run automated tests. Wiring the drop cable directly to terminals 2 and 5 would provide an electrically equivalent circuit, at least when the faceplate is plugged in.

One possibility is that this socket was wired in as an extension by someone who didn't understand the difference between a master socket and an extension socket.

      Re: Slow download on Connect/Mid

One BT technician later and my stats are as follows:

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 8096 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 22.0 db 14.5 db
Noise Margin 17.4 db 31.0 db

      My previous stats were:

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 6208 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 22.0 db 14.5 db
Noise Margin 5.7 db 26.0 db

I am assuming that now the noise margin is higher it's better? My connection speed has also increased by 2MB!

I would check that your wiring is all okay if you have never done so!

Thanks so much for your help guys, I knew this forum would help me like it did the last time I had trouble.

Also, not sure if I missed the answer before; how do I know if i'm on Mid or Connect?
