      Moved to the help forum.

Are you connecting wirelessly? If so that is most likely the problem - a low quality wireless connection to the slower machine. Note that signal quality isn't shown just signal strength and they're not the same thing.

Re: vista very slow download speed why

Generally speaking, XP is the one which has issues with network performance because its networking code seems to be "tuned" to operate best on an old-fashioned dial-up connection. Vista, on the other hand, seems much improved in this area, so I suspect the issue isn't specifically down to Vista.

What are the other differences between the two laptops? Are they identical in every way? Are you using an internal wireless network interface in both laptops, just one or neither? Are the drivers for both wireless network interfaces both fully up to date? And sorry if it seems an obvious question, but are you testing the speed of the two laptops when they're in the same location? There's just so, so many variables that can affect wireless network performance.

I regularly only got 1Mb on wireless using the Sky router and a vista laptop. Upgraded the drivers for the wireless in vista and it improved significantly.

You can check the connection speed on vista wireless by left clicking on the wireless icon in the tray, select "network and sharing center" and click on "view status". That will tell you the actual speed the wireless is connected at rather than just a signal strength which means little.

Re: vista very slow download speed why

There were problems reported with the RC versions of Vista which caused slow network connection, but I thought these had been fixed with the Final release. The fix was to open a Command Prompt as Administrator, type CMD in the Search box, right click the icon and select Run as Admin....
When the box opens type netsh interface tcp set global autotuning=disabled
If this does not work try netsh interface tcp set global autotuning=high

      To return to default, type
netsh interface tcp set global autotuning=normal

I rather think that the adapter drivers are more likely to be the problem. Look for updates.
