      In all fairness, For the not so techno, They would let the auto-run run, So Starbar77, If thats all that you have done nothing else, Then I really wouldnt blame yourself mate.

      Like you mentioned, If this has happened to two drives, Both of which had the same CD last inserted into them, Then indeed it is a coincidence.

      Have you tried rolling back in "System Restore"?

      yeah, even uninstalled McAffee, tried deleting the driver, updating the driver, roling back the driver.

      really annoyed by it, and good places to ring for tech support? dont care about cost, just want it fixed, i use the internet every day so i dnt really want to send the pc off for repair

      dell dimension 3000 and my old dusty compaq evoN600c have suffered the same fate!

      it may be a coincidence indeed, just wish i could fix it!

      Starting with your Dell, Have you tried opening the PC, Disconnecting the IDE and Power for the Drive, Closing and booting up, This will show no drive, Uninstalling any drivers for it, Then shutting down, Opening and plugging it back in, Then booting and reinstalling the drivers?

      I know this isnt the best way of trying to sort it out, But if it is a minor error this could probably sort it out..

      But only do this is a last resort, I have never had a Dell so I dont know what the waranties are like, As it still may be under warrantly and opening could VOID this.

      yeah done that as im out of warranty, even tried another drive.

      its when i looked out my wee old laptop and the same thing happened to that i got really annoyed.

      i hadn't assoiciated the sky BB disk with the problem at this time so saw no risk in using it, i hadn't noticed the drive problem on my PC for a while

      This is a stange one but I did have the same problem last year, with a disk from a pc mag. It turned out that this cd was mis-shaped and that messed the drive up it's self.

      In the end had to put the drive in a different pc install it then do a firmware install and that solved the problem.

      even tried another drive
      If you tried a different working drive and got the same result, this means it is a software problem. Find your Windows Temporary folders and delete everything in them. Restart and try a disk.

      You can also try starting in Safe Mode with minimum drivers and see if it works OK, or better still do a 'clean boot'. To do a clean boot open the Run box and type msconfig. When the pane opens click the General tab, if it is not open and tick to select Selective Startup. Click to clear the Process System Ini, Process Win.Ini and Load Startup. Click the Services tab tick to select Hide all MS check box. Click Disable all and then OK. Restart the PC. To go back to a normal boot open msconfig and on the General tab, select Normal Startup
