      New to sky broadband

Can anybody help me please ???

Just got sky broadband installed but having some problems with my d'load speed etc. I was told when i was connecting that i would get speeds up to 5mb. Although i am only getting about 0.7mb speed. When i go to d'load torrents i am lucky if i am getting 25kps but when i go to my mates house i d'load the same torrent from a 2mb connection and was getting speeds of 250kps. I have been connected since the 31st Oct 2007 so i would of thought i should be running a good connection by now. Any ideas guys ??

Hi, is your mate on Base? If he is then that might explain why his download speeds are better than yours. Sky(maybe BT) throttle speeds on the Connect package. Furthermore have you opened a port in your PC and also your router ? There is an excellent tutorial in the p2p forum to assist you. Also are you using utorrent, if so on the status page at the bottom right what colour is the triangle?

      Re: New to sky broadband

Downloading torrents is not an accurate way of figuring out your possible speeds - try using the skyuser speedtest and see what that comes back with. Have you checked all your settings within your P2P client? - Download speed may be being limited by the software (Anything from max download speed per torrent to it using a blocked port). Are you using wireless? - This could also limit thing, if so try the TCP optimizer software (I haven't got a link but it is mentioned all over this site).

      Re: New to sky broadband

Yep i have ran various tests and getting 0.7mb max. However i have noticed tonight that i tried utorrent again and was getting speeds of 290kps for about 10 mins then it was away again. Can somebody tell me how to open the ports and would this help?

Trying nzbs at the mo but only getting 130kps

      Re: New to sky broadband

have a look at your torrent client homepage or help file for ways to check/ configure your ports.

connect is throttled and you may never see the full 8meg speed until you get moved to the mid package

from the speeds you are talking about it does not look like a port/nat problem
i am down loading at the moment at between 135 - 260 kB/s and this has more to do with seeder/leacher ratio (i get about 6meg on speedtesters)
