      Talking New To Sky

      Hi there all.

As you can see i am quite new to Sky and i had Virgin Media before but had a few issues with there over charging for services but thats another story.

At present i do have a few issues with Sky if any of you can help me please.

I am on Sky Connect at present

First of all i have very slow download speeds on UTorrent i mean the slow about between 50 and 70 kbs/ps this is not a joke, i had 200 with virgin it takes me about 8hrs to download one film so as you see i do need major help.

I have not done port forwarded as yet but will try this tonight when i finish what else do you think i should do ?

Also i have heard there maybe some issues also with connect that they choke it so your downloads are not that good is this trUE ?

Any comment would be helpful and thanks

      Paul

      Re: New To Sky

Hi and welcome to the forum. As i understand it Connect is the only bb service that sky "throttle" . However you must open a port not just in the pc but also in the router , under the forum marked p2p file sharing you will see an excellent tutorial telling you how to do this. To be honest though i dont know how much differnce it will make on Connect

      Re: New To Sky

Connect is a rebranded BT service which does get throttled,

but saying that are you showing any nat problems on Utorrent ?

( i use azureus, which shows a red or green light to let me know, if you are having nat problems and are unable to be conectable from others this will slow you down)

      Re: New To Sky

Connect has a training period of about 10 days, during which time the speed will go up and down until it finds it's most stable rate. During this period you should reboot the router at least once a day to allow the router to re-sync with the exchange.

I do not think Sky actually do any 'throttling', this is done by BT, who claim the use of torrents and P2P, slow things down for other users.

      Re: New To Sky

I am having the exact same problem but i am only getting 25kps when i was getting 250kps with 2mb virgin. I have been connected with them since 31st oct and they have sent me out 2 modems blaming it on that and saying it could be my laptop. Think i will be cancelling unless they do something about all they keep saying is the tests are fine all the time

Nah, uh, it's Sky doing the throttling. BT charge Sky for the amount of bandwidth available between the exchanges and Sky's network, and it's by far the biggest overhead in providing a broadband service using BT's IPstream product. Because P2P uses such a disproportionately large amount of network bandwidth, throttling that dramatically reduces the amount of (expensive) bandwidth that Sky needs to buy from BT.

On the other hand, because with LLU, the Sky network goes right to the exchange, Sky doesn't need to buy bandwidth from BT, so its costs are mainly setup costs, rather than ongoing rental costs. This is why it's one of the few broadband providers offering (practically) unlimited data allowances, and the only one doing it at budget prices.

      Talking Re: New To Sky

thanks very much for your comments, i loaded tcp otimizer and put in the details for the portforward and it started to give me download of about 400 kbs/ps by all accounts this is still very slow but it is the fastest that i have from them since i started but as i looked at the screen this morning it has gone back to 60 kbs/ps so i think that it may be true that i am getting throttled by sky so i will be going back to virgin if it does not get any better as this is my 10th day with the service today so i will see if it improves .

Many thanks to all the who took the time to answer me
