      weird attenuation

      hi all,
my first post round here, got sky Max on tuesday after living with BT Total for a year (cringe) and im still stuck on G.DMT for a start so not getting any major increase in speed (going to have to contact sky about that because i dont believe in paying 10/mo for a service they are not providing). but anyway, ive used DMT to decrease the snr margin on router to mimimum and managed to get a fairly stable 3.7-3.9MB connection at least during day. but the thing ive noticed is that if i set the lpair to outer my attenuation downstream drops from 51-59db to 15.5db. im wondering if this is just a bug from me changing snr or if it actually has an effect by using a diferent pair of wires.

      my current stats are

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 3776 kbps 768 kbps
Line Attenuation 15.5 db 31.5 db
Noise Margin 1.7 db 13.0 db

nice and stble and most speed tests report around 3.1mb download

      Re: weird attenuation

Attenuation of 15.5db is a known bug. Try a reboot or power cycle and rerun the stats!

Also, a noise margin of 1.7 is very low! Anything under 6 and you can expect very shaky connections!

      Re: weird attenuation

i thought it may be a bug, and as for the noie margin the conenctions been up like that since about 5am this morning with no drop outs. i think it would be better to get adsl2 sorted out rather than playing with SNR margins though so ill be contacting sky later on

      Re: weird attenuation

Realistically with a SNR of 1.7 you won't have a connection each evening.

No doubt others will confirm but a attenuation of 59 mean you will get quite a low speed, the speed checker on this site will confirm, but I bet it'd be about 3-4mb.

Sky are not going to change you over to adsl2 with those sort of stats, if they did I doubt you'd have form of connection!!

      Re: weird attenuation

i did not mention that i kept that snr on an evening, i have more than one person i know who use DMT on Be broadband and therefore i know what adjusting the snr does and when everything starts to crash. ill leave adsl2 for the moment as im still getting near enough 1.5mb more than i got on bt broadband without any tweeks (2.9mb as opposed to 1.5if i was lucky)

      Re: weird attenuation

Disagree with that comment over SNR. Am currently on SNR of 2.5 and its rock solid, no drops so it does vary. Some routers will hold the connection better than others.

well i set my router back to its normal settings. synced at ~2.8-2.9mb so not bad. but its now 'locking' up totally every 30mins or so if that. (and did this before i changed SNR, anyone got any ideas wats up. because im getting tired of going unplug/reconnect router all the time now

detailed stats below, very slow speed tonight, probably something to do with the fact the router wont stay working for more than 30mins without locking up solid requiring a hard restart.
