      ADSL2+ Speed Test
We estimate your line is capable of between 16mb to 24mb broadband on an ADSL2+ service.

      SkyUser - ADSL2 Line Speed Checker - upto 24mb

But as SkyBB only goes to 16mb, would i expect to get the maximum?

Don't quote me but yes looking at them results.

Remember it is about 15323mb or similar at the maximum on Sky.

Wait for someone else to comment as I am no expert.

You ought to be getting the full 8Mbit/sec on Nildram with those attenuation figures. The fact that you're only getting 6.5Mbit/sec with a noise margin of 3dB suggests that you probably have some wiring issues, most likely extension wiring in the house.

On Nildram, those wiring issues will give you a slightly lower sync speed than you otherwise might have got, although you'd still have a pretty reliable service. On Sky, however, those wiring issues are likely to hit you hard, with the service being unreliable, or Sky "capping" your speed to a level lower than you have now to try and keep the connection stable.

My advice would be to try and address the wiring issues before you contemplate moving to Sky. Once you've got your downstream speed up to the full 8Mbit/sec on Nildram, with a respectable noise margin (substantially above 7dB), then it would be worth considering a move to Sky. I reckon you should be able to get the full 16Mbit/sec on Sky Broadband Max - which ends up being 15323kbit/sec because of the way Sky configures its broadband connections.

But like I say, try and improve your performance with Nildram first, otherwise you could end up being a mightily hacked-off Sky broadband customer. The advice given elsewhere on this site about improving wiring is equally applicable to other ADSL service providers, so have a look around for tips and advice.

Re: Thinking of joining sky BB, what speed would i get?

Thx very much for the info.
I am on an extension from the master socket, probably about 30ft of cable from master to PC.

I contacted Sky today and they told me that my line only supported 8mb.
After telling the guy BB was the only reason i was thinking of moving, he went to "speak to his advisor" and then told me i could get 9.7mb guaranteed.
Makes me a bit suspicious, as before he told me no more than 8mb maximum.
I don't want to move if i can't get much better speed.

Going to move router to master and cat5 from it to PC and see if it helps noise margin.
Will this be better than using what i have now (30ft telephone extension)?
