      ADSL2+ frustrations

      Hi

I have just migrated from BE where I was running 14megs on a ADSL2+ line.

I now have sky and the following stats according to mognuts:

      Mode: G.DMT
      Channel: Interleave
      Trellis: ON
      Line Status: No Defect
      Training Status: Showtime
      Down Up
      SNR (dB): 12.3 13.0
      Attn(dB): 34.0 21.5
      Pwr(dBm): 19.8 6.9
      Max(Kbps): 9408 1088
      Rate (Kbps): 7360 608

Ok a few weeks ago I managed to get through to T3 and spent ages messing around with my connection. I explained that I was on ADSL2+ and now my line was setup for G.DMT. The bloke said that he had switched me to ADSL2+

I Told the guy that I am not on ADSL2+ and in effect he was telling lies. I left it at that and went on holiday! Im back now and I know that I used to get 14 mbps on my line with my old ISP. what do I need to say firstly to get to a t3 guy? and secondly how to I get them to switch my line to ADSL2+??

      TIA

What on earth made you switch from Be*? 14 meg is probably a max speed on ADSL2+ which Be* use.

Post your full detailed stats, see the link below, someone may be able to help. I doubt very much if you will get 14mb with your present attenuation.

Yes but surely I should get over 11 mbps? I would be happy with 11 or so

Your stats look quite good. Phone Sky again, Tier 3, and get them to put you on ADSL2+. Although G,DMT is capable of 12 mb, Sky seem to cap it at 8, for some reason.

      Re: ADSL2+ frustrations

I also moved from Be* to Sky but mainly because of problems in West Yorkshire atm - although ive heard they fixed them the day i moved!

I think you will find that you're Attn is quite high 34db down which is quite high, but you should see around 8-11mb as you stated.

GMDT I thought is only capable of 8, a few sites and people have told me that, wikipedia has a huge page on it. Anyway how can I get the T1 to put me throught to T3? without having to give my life story?

You are obviously looking at a different page on Wikipedia from me. This source has come under a lot of criticism for giving duff information, so it might not be correct.

      Re: ADSL2+ frustrations

The ITU documents for G.dmt definitely give 12MBit/sec as the maximum speed, although as far as I know, every ISP in the UK offering G.dmt connections caps that to 8Mbit/sec. To get a full 12Mbit/sec connection on G.dmt requires near perfect phone line characteristics across the full G.dmt frequency spectrum.

For example my line will sync at the maximum 15323kbit/sec on ADSL2+, so it's a pretty good line, but if I force the modem to negociate a G.dmt connection it only gets 9504kbit/sec. Getting speeds much above 8Mbit/sec on G.dmt is really difficult, and so I think a lot of providers don't bother, rather than have loads of customers complaining how slow their connection speed is compared to the advertised maximum. Well, even more customers complaining than they do now, that is.
