      Mystery cap or not

I was wondering if anyone at Sky (or otherwise) knows about why the following happens:

Originally when I joined Sky BB I got a connection speed of 16mbps (as I live quite close to the exchange). Then one day I lost my 2+ connection and was dropped to gdmt only, Sky seemed to think my line wasn't capable of 2+ despite the fact I had been happily connected at 2+ for some months.

I convinced them to give me back 2+ only to find I now only sync at 7.5mbps if I connect using 2+ (however if I put my router into gdmt mode I get 12mbps connection speed). I have twice spoken to tier 3 who assure me my line isn't capped but can't explain the 7.5mbps connection speed (other than the usual fud). The figure shown for the maximum possible speed (from my router) is around 18mbps. I seem to remember once reading a post by someone who had identical symptoms. Anyone at Sky know why this occurs?

Another idiosyncracy is when I connect using gdmt my connection is interleaved and when I 2+ it is fastpath.

      Thanks

      Re: Mystery cap or not

Need to see your noise margin and actual sync speed and max rate as reported by your router for each ADSL mode.

Ignore what the router says re Interleave/Fast - it doesn't report correctly (ADSL2+ always shows as Fast).

      Re: Mystery cap or not

IF you've complained about speed before, Sky tend to put lines to what the BT checker says it can take - very rarely will anyone take notice of attenuation levels...

Well that certainly looks like a capped connection to me: actual rate much lower than max rate figure and high noise margin.

You're getting a slightly higher sync on G.DMT but it's still capped (at 8096kbps).

Mine line quailty must be pretty bad at the moment usually I can get anything upto 11Mbps on gdmt and the error counts seem a little higher than usual.

      Thanks Saturday.

Ah well, I'll just have to get by with between 7 - 10 Mbps. Who knows what will happen if I complain again, I might drop down to 2 Mbps
