'Hitting a million' news article question

Hi I have just read through the news article about sky broadband hitting a million subscribers. I have noticed in the article it states that they have been listening to the people on this forum about a broadband solution for gamers to free us from pinging. It then goes on to say about changing the line settings to a 'fast leaving line'. What exactly is a 'fast leaving line' and what are the benefits? I hope I haven't read the article wrong or something?

Also I have read on this forum that sky are releasing/testing their new routers and they are supposed to be rolling out a new firmware for their exsiting Netgear router. Has it been proved yet that this will help with disconnections etc?

      Thanks in advance!!!

Re: 'Hitting a million' news article question

there is a bit of a split at the moment between those who belive sky will now put you on fast path (as possibly indicated by the letter ?), but other belive this to be related to the "max delay" settings which when lowerd can improve pings (but also may also reduce speed and stability)

Ok thanks for your very speedy reply!!! Do you know any details about the software update for the existing router or the improvements (connection wise) for the new router?

      Thanks

Re: 'Hitting a million' news article question

Thanks for your replies. I must admit Im getting a bit annoyed with the amount of disconnections that occur!

I dont know if its just me but I haven't heard many negative comments about other ISP's with regards to disconnections. Sky customer service have said to me its because most other ISP's only offer up to 2mb broadband, which doesnt disconnect much because its slow. They said anything above 2mb starts to cause problems. I think thats a bit annoying really because not everyone understands about wiring in their house to improve the connection reliability/prevent errors on the line, they would just see it as a very unreliable service. I am starting to think maybe its down to Sky's router etc that causes the frequent disconnections. Anyone agree or disagree with me?

yes and no, the router firmware update will hopefully help with many people router problems
you could do a test by using mognuts utility to up your SNR to 15 and see if your connection is more stable (will be slower)

Whilst not having a definitive response, it would appear it is the Max Delay and not changing a to Fastpath, from various sources, although not confirmed officially.

Good job, it was a planned rollout and a limited number then, if that is the case.
