      fixed my disconection problem

ever since i had sky bb installed, i would have to reset the router at least once a day as it apeard to just hang, i had a noise margin of 6.7 to 6.9.

so decided to look into this more, basicaly i removed the ring wire 3 from my telephone box, since dooing that the noise margin has rose to around the 11 mark, i have not had any more disconects for 84hours, im also still downloading at 13.5 meg.

was the ring wire 3 the cause of my disconections?

yes i believe the only wires needed are 1 and 5, the ring is not needed.

Yes, it is amazing how much this simple fix can improve a connection. It should be one of the first steps taken to improve a bad connection.

      Re: fixed my disconection problem

somthing else Which i think should be added to our sky user "help files", id guess its safe to assume that for most people before moving to sky, were using usb modems, conecting via a router and a network cable will be a first for many people i know it was for me.

I sugest that people make sure there lan card fitted to there pcs are using the most uptodate drivers for the lan card, id put money on it that most people are using old drivers on there lan cards (the wire your cable from your router plugs into on your pc)

MAKE SURE YOUR LAN DRIVERS ARE UP TO DATE!!!

but please to others dont go hacking your wires or removing them from your phone box unless you know what your dooing.

      Re: fixed my disconection problem

My connection drops once a day every day, used to be around 8pm, but has gradually moved down to around 5/6pm. I can get my connection back by reseting the router. Is this the same or similar problem to what you had Lee. If so,, is what you did fairly easy to do, or complicated?

I did exactly the same thing a couple of weeks ago to solve the same problem. If you have a wire (usually orange & white) connected to terminal 3 on your master telephone socket, then remove or cut it. It seems to act as a noise aerial!

There is a photo in Post 27 in this thread:
      Please, Please Help. Constant Disconnections

This wire was used to provide a ring signal to very old type telephones plugged into extensions, but this function is now carried out by your ADSL filters. The only wires now required are usually blue and white/white and blue and are connected to terminals 2 and 5.

yes sounds exactly liike my problem, its not fairly easy its very easy, providing you dont cause damage to any other wires etc, common sence and a steady hand is all you need, as well as a screwdriver etc.

only attempt this if your confident (its not a big job at all that i promise you) just be carefull with all the other wires as there may be quite a few, and only only only disconect the ring wire which is attacthed to number 3.

      Re: fixed my disconection problem

Thanks for the info guys, I'm swamped with work and such at the moment so I probably won't have chance to attempt this until Sunday. I haven't had a chance to read everything properly, so I may be back with a quick question or two before 'the snipping'. Thanks again for your help though
