4Mb on one laptop 2Mb on the other!?

Not specifically related to having Sky broadband, but I was originally a bit disappointed with the speed when I got Sky Mid broadband because on my laptop I measured the speed as 2Mb. However I've recently measured the speed with my work laptop and I got a speed of 4Mb.

I have repeated the tests at the same time and they are consistently at 2 and 4 Mb respectively.

Loading videos on You Tube is much quicker on my work PC so it's not just the speed test that's different.

Does anyone know what could cause this difference and how I can speed up my home laptop? I'm using my old BT voyager router rather than the Sky one because it's more reliable and you can switch it off but the speed was also 2Mb with the Sky router.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I take it you are connecting wirelessly? If so that is why it varies, try connecting to each of them by ethernet cable and check speeds again.
If after this you still notice vast differences then you need to thoroughly check the slower laptop for viruses and malware.

Re: 4Mb on one laptop 2Mb on the other!?

Just tried the speed test with a network cable and got:

      6Mb Work Laptop
      3Mb Home Laptop

      So still a big difference.

I also didn't reallise that the wireless link slowed it down so much.

You need to check to see what is using up your bandwidth then, make sure nothing untoward is running in Task manager and scan with a couple of anti spyware programs as well.

if you have xp on your home laptop you could try TCP Optimizer (on forum somewhere) and see if that improves things

Thanks for the tip. I ran the TCP optimiser and now I get 5Mb on my home laptop. I'm amazed it made that much difference!
