Maybe I need to be a bit more careful before giving out 'advice'.

      Well !

I did that skyuser speed test you suggested. Its output was :

"Your download speed is 872Kbps. Your upload speed is 539Kbps. Your ISP is Easynet".

Now - shouldn't my download speed read about 10x that (I get around 815KBps downloading from newsgroups). Also, shouldn't my ISP read "Sky" ?

Sky bought out Easynet and still use it's network so thats why it says it - nothing to worry about there...

      Re: Slow Connection Speed

There is something a bit strange going on. You say you are on the '8 Mb service' ie Mid, but your upload figure is far too high. I think it should be an absolute maximum of 416, more likely in the mid 300s and the stats you posted earlier confirm this. I am at a loss to explain that Unless in some way your upload speed has been increased at the expense of your download. I am afraid I don't know enough to say if this is possible.

Your download speed should be a good bit higher, with your attenuation and SNR you should be getting the maximum available, certainly in the high 7000s. I am still convinced that something is wrong with your connection at the exchange. Was the latest test you did wired? You should stick to wired tests until the speed is sorted out, there are too many vagrancies with wireless.

Note - When downloading always select the Custom install or you will end up with stuff you don't want.

      Re: Slow Connection Speed

      Well spotted IsItMe.
Have you been accidentally put onto the Max package?
If so the download rate is still way wrong on the speed testers but your D/L rate via newsgroups (when segmented) is quite good.
Did you say that you have run the TCP optimiser?
      Mac.

      Re: Slow Connection Speed

      Well spotted !

Of course, all my tests have been through ethernet cable, to eliminate any wireless problems.

I wonder if this latest information gives any further clues to the solution....

(But hey, at least I'm getting my 8mbit download from newsgroups so now I'm happy....now my worry is exceeding my cap)
