I still think that your wireless is the issue. When you connected the ethernet cable did you disable the wireless card and reboot the PC to allow it to collect its IP address from the wired network card? If not, then I think you would still be using wireless even with the cable connected.

Try disabling the wireless access in the router (the LED will go off) then boot up the PC with the ethernet cable connected.
I disabled it in the router config menu. Light has been out ever since. I have rebooted pc a few times since.

      Thanks eyemdee & richone -

Like you suggested I disabled wireless access in the router - the wireless light went out, but internet light stayed on. I then rebooted my PC. Same problem, and I'm pretty sure that this time data transfer is through the ethernet cable.

I'm 340m from the exchange, and surely should be getting better rates than I am ? I'm getting about 40 kb/sec updating a newsgroup !

Also, when using the ethernet cable (like now) it seems to periodically disconnect me. If I reset the router, nothing happens. I then restart my PC, and can connect again.

      Thanks again

      i get about 43kB/s on p2p

did you try the optimizer on your laptop ?

      Re: Slow Connection Speed

Yes I tried the optimiser earlier this evening - seemed to make a few changes, but no effect on data transfer speed.

You mentioned your p2p - I'm not using these to test data transfer rates, as the p2p's can be pretty unreliable. I'm pretty certain I have an actual problem with a slow connection, rather than that I'm testing it using unreliable sources. I've checked by browsing, downloading files, using newsgroups and using internet speed testers. All operate at around 1/100th of the speed I should be getting (i.e. 50 kbps instead of 5000 kbps). Occasionally the rate can go up (mainly using newsgroups) to around 200 kbps, but never much faster than that.

Couldn't it be something to do with my PC ? I'm hopefully going to try a friend's laptop tomorrow, to see if that's the same.

      Cheers
      Dan

      Re: Slow Connection Speed

what do you get on an http download? run the speed test on my sig and if you get an transfer rate on the large file of around 800KB/sec then its running fine...

      Re: Slow Connection Speed

i would have thought wireless was the problem with your PC but you say you are getting the same from your laptop even when wired and optimized ?

i'm a bit stumped, let me know how the test goes with your friends laptop tomorrow

(from your stats you should be getting around 7meg)

      Re: Slow Connection Speed

I've looked through the thread and can't see an obvious problem - your stats are fine. As already discussed, wireless is the obvious culprit but you say the speeds are similar wired?

One thing that strikes me is that you have never posted an actual speedtest result wired and wireless. I don't mean to be rude but is there a possibility that you're mixing bits with bytes and actually your speedtest results are fine? (e.g. with an 8096kbps connection you'd expect a download speed of ~6500kbps or 800kBps. On P2P a bit less than this. Most P2P report in bytes whereas the router reports bits.

If not that then there are only so many other possibilities:

      • wireless problems (not in this case apparently)
      • line errors (not evident in your stats)
      • incorrect TCP/IP settings (not likely with Vista)
      • traffic shaping/bandwidth restriction/contention (unknown so far with Sky LLU)
      • an overloaded speedtest server (you haven't posted actual results - try this one wired)
      • other traffic on the PC/LAN (e.g. other users in your house, Sky Anytime, BBC iplayer, malware)

      Re: Slow Connection Speed

      IAmNotTheEnemy - I wish I was getting 800 KB/Sec ! I did the large file downlaod, and speeds hovered around 60-65 KB/Sec.

Saturday - good point about mixing bits and bytes, but I don't think I've got them confused. I did the speedtest you suggested (Namesco) and rates they gave me were download = 862 kbps and upload = 355 kbps (Namesco BroadbandMax Bandwidth speedtest | Test your ADSL connection speed)

As to your other possilibities, you suggest none of them would be likely. I am now connected wired; no line errors according to stats (an on phoning sky, they said it looked fine from their end); don't know much about TCP/IP settings, but am running vista (the TCP optimiser made changes but no change to speeds); there is no other traffic on my network, and no other programs hogging bandwidth including malware.

richone - I will let you know how it goes with trying my friends laptop on my connection - will report back later today, thanks.

Another thought - could it be anything to do with the drivers for my router or network card ?
