      Smile Network Key Problem

Hi all.....Ive just formatted my hard drive and reinstalled windows after a nasty virus destroyed all my executables.
Ive been trying to get back on to my wireless network but I keep receiving this error message.
      --------------------------
The network password needs to be 40bits or 104bits depending on your network configuration.
This can be entered as 5 or 13 ascii characters or 10 or 26 hexadecimal characters.
      ---------------------------

I just enter my key, the 8 digit one from the bottomof the router, what am I doing wrong ??

(Ive jumped on a neighbours unsecure network just to send this!!)

      Horsey.

I hope you asked their permission first, because otherwise that's illegal under the Misuse of Computers Act!

It sounds like you've configured your wireless adaptor to use WEP security, rather than the WPA security which is what's normal for the Sky Router. It's possible that when you reinstalled Windows, it was installed without the Windows Service Packs (and all those millions of other updates that you should have installed over the years). Only Windows XP with Service Pack 2 offers WPA security (unless the software provided with the wireless network adaptor offers it instead).

You'll need to connect your PC to the Sky router using that yellow Ethernet cable provided with the router. If it isn't long enough, you can buy longer ones from computer shops like PC World. Once you've done that, get all the Windows updates, and then you'll have WPA security available.

      Re: Network Key Problem

i just checked, I am using WEP security.
So I assume if i just get sevice pack 2 i will be able to connect to my router using WPA ?
