Finally, My Max connection is running.. but..

Hi folks.. first timer here so be nice : )

Now, I know from a couple of stickies i've read that people hate this kinda question, but I could really do with some direct knowledge from some of you gurus out there.

I've just had the sky max package installed and all is fine apart from I just wish it wasa little bit faster. It seems to be topping out at around 305kps, from microsoft etc, which obviously.. is fast enough, but should I be getting more?

As the crow flies, I am a smidge over a mile from the exchange, and my house is a new property so I'd assume any cabling is fairly new.

Now for the stats. After logging into the router it says:

      DownStream Connection Speed: 7128 kbps
      Line Attenuation: 42.0 db
      Noise Margin: 6.4 db

I put my hand up to not fully understanding what these numbers mean after reading through the sticky about them, so sorry

      Speedtest.net comes in at 2768kps..

So, is this sounding right for these mystical numbers i've got from the router?

Thanks a lot folks, any input would be great

      Ben

Re: Finally, My Max connection is running.. but..

Is this a wired or wireless connection?

With your sync you should be getting ~5750kbps from a speedtest. Wireless, maybe a lot less.

If you're getting less than ~5750kbps wired then run TCPoptimizer and try this test site.

Re: Finally, My Max connection is running.. but..

      You wired or wireless?

Your figures are exactly the same as me especially your 42 db, although I'm a little further from the exchange.

I didn't go for max as I didn't see the point as I knew 8mb was max I would get.

You can see in my sig how the speeds compare. Although there are a couple of laptops we use for the kids, my main computer is wired.

Post Sky DLM and after some cowboy contracters and BT ruined my line quality (was 6mb pre DLM):

      You've just doubled my speed!!!

Brilliant. Thanks a lot mate, much appreciated.

Re: Finally, My Max connection is running.. but..

      You're welcome

You may find there's a bit more speed to be got out of your connection as you're syncing at 7128kbps where ~8000kbps could be possible with your attenuation. See the cabling and faceplate help forum for info - basically you need to run a comparison connection with your test socket which is hidden behind the faceplate of your master socket (assuming you have an NTE5).

Re: Finally, My Max connection is running.. but..

rightio, i'll have a look when i get home. So basically i just remove the face plate, plug in the phone line directly and see if its any faster than before?

Or is it the router info I should be looking at?

      Cheers

initially router sync speed, then a speed test of some sort...

Re: Finally, My Max connection is running.. but..

Well i've taken off the face plate and plugged it directly i and now the router is saying its Connection Speed is 10355 kbps and 764 kbps. Quite a bit of a difference really.

Problem is the master socket is in a different room so it would have to be wireless. Is wireless as problematic and as slow as it sounds from some of these posts?

      Stats at the moment are:

Line Attenuation: 42.0 db 24.3 db
Noise Margin: 7.1 db 12.0 db

If i did decide to use the master socket, is there anything else I should do to the socket, or do I just keep the faceplate off?

Crazy, its downloading now from microsoft at 1.04mb a second!!

Re: Finally, My Max connection is running.. but..

how many other sockets do you have in the property? if you only have the one then id say buy an xte-2005 faceplate from ADSL Nation LTD - Quality ADSL Products UK - adslnation.com and use that
