Can't connect by cable only by wireless?

I'm just trying to get to the bottom of my disconnection problems. I connect through wireless. I still get disconnects at the master socket & test socket. I've done a quite line test, no crackling or whistleing but there is a slight hmming like mains 50hz sound.
So i'm going to try wired to eliminate any wireless problems although i dont understand how that makes a difference as its the internet light that drops out, the wireless is still fine and can connect locally to the router even when theres no internet?
The thing is i cant connect at all via a lan cable, i just get the yellow triangle pop up saying "limited or no connectivity". Any ideas?
      Thanks in advance!

Re: Can't connect by cable only by wireless?

Are you using a crossover cable instead of the straight through type you need ?
Is your computer's ethernet adapter enabled ?...check in Device Manager (and perhaps the BIOS).
