Connection slows down to a crawl every few days

I've got a fast Sky broadband connection - it's working at about 9Mbps according the speed test at http://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest.

However, every couple of days it slows to a crawl and I have to restart the router which seems to deal with the problem. Pages are very slow to load, although it doesn't disconnect completely. It must be a problem with the router, right? As soon as I reboot the router through it's web interface, I get the fast connection up and running again.

      Any suggestions?

Could be errors building up over a few days gradually slowing it, cant you just reboot your router at night (or in the morning) each day to eliminate the slowdowns?

It would be better to find the cause rather than treating the symptoms. I would suggest posting your router stats so some of the brilliant experts here can perhaps suggest why this is happening.

PLEASE READ FIRST: How to obtain and post router stats

Also if you have any telephone extensions with the orange & white "ring" wire connected on pin 3, then disconnect or cut this wire as it now serves no useful purpose (the ADSL filter does the same job) and can be a cause of problems like this.

I have had similar problems which have now miraculously disappeared since I disconnected one such wire on a disused upstairs extension!

I don't think errors building up cause slow downs. What will do, is a large surge of errors over a short period. There are a great number of users experiencing this, at different times, but often around 9 pm. You can post your stats but I dont think they will tell you much except that you have some errors. It is when these occur that is important, until the router firmware is released, I don't think you can do much about it other than re-boot your router.

If you can discover when the errors are occurring, ie, the time you slow down, have a look around your house to see if anything is starting, like CH, or treadmills. These can cause errors on your line.
