Once again thanks for such an informative post. This really helps me to get down to the heart of the issue and it's the sort of post I wished I'd read a couple of years ago when, as a not so young chemist I was struggling with the vagaries of data and communications. Actually I still am struggling, I suppose! . I'm keeping that post safe and rank it highly.
Thanks for taking so much trouble to reply, James.

Excellent James, maybe the Mods could consider stickying this, it is one of the best explanations I have read on the subject

I am left wondering if, when the new software is rolled out, Sky will automatically remove all the speed caps that they've been imposing on many of their customers.
Hope this is not going completley off topic, but as seen on previous posts about internal wiring, where home exstensions have been the cause of most of the errors (loads of errors when plugged into exstension, but none or nearly none when in the master socket) would the new firmware help ?

If they fix the bit swapping problem, then the router should be more tolerant of sub-optimal internal wiring, although improving the internal wiring should still improve the sync speed if the router isn't already syncing at the maximum speed.
