      Advise/ ideas? Broadband speeds.

I'm beginning to come to the conclusion that perhaps this is a computer issue rather than a ISP issue but my Dad insists this isn't possible so let me explain...

Recently I was using BT Broadband option 2 with the 8MB downloads but using Speedtest.net I could sometimes get 'scores' of below 300kbps download which is ridiculous. The highest I would ever get was 2500.

Well I recently moved house, so took the opportunity to change providers. As I'm sure you'll guess I went to Sky. Now I don't live much further away from my last house (I live in Suburbia not the sticks) but I still have naturally changed my phone number, my modem and my provider - the only thing that remains the same is the laptop I use. Scores are still the same as above -with ridiculous lows (once under 100!) to a peak of mediocre 2200.

According to my modem (accessed the normal way) my download speed should be 8096. I can't use BTspeed checker for the line as it keeps reporting Error.

I'm certainly not an expert but I'm not a complete novice when it comes to computers either. For further details I have a Samsung X20 laptop on Windows XP and I'm on the Sky Mid Package.

      Any ideas?!

It will do if you are LLUd. This tester only works with BT type ADSL. Try using the SkyUser tester.

Also take your detailed stats and post them, someone may be able to advise.

      Re: Advise/ ideas? Broadband speeds.

      Hi,

Thanks for the info so far, it's certainly made a difference - my 'score' is now a nose-bleed inducing 5500! However I do still keep getting some relatively regular scores of 150 odd, any ideas? Almost as if line keeps dropping.

What stats should I be posting?

the speed 8096 is the max for mid and with normal "overheads" you will never get this speed (but should be better than 5.5, stats will give more details once posted)

also just to check if you are wireless this will aslo affect speed (wireless is a bit pap)
try wired and have a check if not wired already

have a look at link in my sig - will explain a lot for you, then if you could post your detailed stats

(P.S you need to re-boot your modem as the Att 15.5 is a known bug and is prob incorrect)

Yes, I'm using wireless and to be honest I don't mind not getting the absolute peak speeds - I'm not that heavy a user really. I like the freedom of wireless around the house. Getting anything around 5000 regularly would do me.

But it's these constant 1 and 200 scores that keep annoying me - that's just ridiculous.
