      Thumbs down Wildly Fluctuating Speeds.

Just got Sky Max activated today, I'm a bit concerned at the results of various speed tests throughout the day.

      6600 kb/s at lunchtime,
      650 kb/s at 6pm,
      1940 kb/s just now.

      Stats from the router are

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 7616 kbps 768 kbps
Line Attenuation 15.5 db 26.5 db
Noise Margin 7.1 db 14.0 db

I understand the 15.5db attenuation is a bug, it was reading 42 earlier.
I've tried a couple of filters and I'm running from the test socket, so I'm all ears if anyone can explain how its jumping from 6.5 meg to less than 1 meg?

      Wireless or wired?

Both, very little difference between the two at any time.

      Re: Wildly Fluctuating Speeds.

Wireless would be the No.1 cause of fluctuating speeds so if not that then next up are:

      • overloaded speedtest server
      • line problems (dropping noise margin, line errors causing resends)
      • other generated traffic (malware, other LAN users)

      Re: Wildly Fluctuating Speeds.

I think overloaded server could be the culprit, noise margin not really changing and BT repaired my line this morning as they buggered it up yesterday trying to activate Sky.
I'll try downloading a few files over the next few days and see if that gives different results.
      Thanks for your speedy replies!

      Re: Wildly Fluctuating Speeds.

If you only activated yesterday then the odds are your line is "training" and will continue to fluctuate for a period of time. This is something you should have been made aware of from the start.
If it continues to fluctuate after Friday then call up and ask them to look at the problem as it may be a number of things causing it, try to be on ethernet when you call though as that takes a lot of pain out of the call. Also make sure you are plugged into your master socket, with filters correctly sited and if all else fails unplug everything from the line except the router/modem and see if things settle.
Also if BT have been on the line to "fix" it how do you know it's properly "fixed"?

      Re: Wildly Fluctuating Speeds.

I dont trust BT myself, so I took the liberty of ringing the fault checking number AFTER they fixed it.
All seems well now, so I'll see how it goes over the next few days.

He is on Sky Max which has no "training" period.

      Re: Wildly Fluctuating Speeds.

I had poor connection on my router (around 6mb) when i got Sky. I moved it down next to the main point the same day and i got 14mb, pretty much consistantly. Seems strange as the point was brand new upstairs, just didn't connect quickly through it.
