Bluecandylover I had same hissing/crackling on my phone and found it was a faulty wire coming from the BT box into my house. BT replaced this free of charge and the noise has now gone also my connection seems more stable that it was.

Thanks people will try that later.

I got a Non-Sky router plugged in and here are the brief stats

      Showtime Firmware Version: 3.46
      Line State: SHOWTIME
      Modulation: G.dmt
      Annex Mode: ANNEX_A
      Startup Attempts: 1
      Max Tx Power: -38 dBm/Hz
      CO Vendor: GLOBESPAN
Elaspsed Time: 0 days 0 hours 6 minutes 48 seconds

      Downstream Upstream

      SNR Margin 6.6 10.0 dB
      Line Attenuation 59.2 31.5 dB
      Errored Seconds 6 1
      Loss of Signal 0 0
      Loss of Frame 0 0
      CRC Errors 148 1
      Data Rate 3392 768 kbps
      Latency INTERLEAVED INTERLEAVED

This is within 30 seconds of it being plugged in.

I dunno if it will gradually crawl to a standstill like other router but a YouTube video loaded quicker than earlier this morning.

Nobody seems to have pointed out the obvious, with an attenuation of 59 db, you are some way from the exchange. Even if your line was perfect, which it is not, the most you could expect is 3-4Mb. This does not mean that it is capped, it just means that it is incapable of syncing any higher, due to length and interference. The only thing you can do is try to get BT to improve your line, this will definitely help. Just remember, when you tell them that your line is noisy, don't mention Sky Broadband.

Nope I will not do that, the connection was as just as bad with that router, within 2 hours of using it, I was back on using over priced Orange GPRS via a mobile phone.

      Regards
      Blue.

EDIT: I tried the old corded telephone in the test socket alone and not a single crackle, the previous crackle was probably either the cordless phone or the extension cord.

If they were to cap my line, I would have like 1Mb internet, and if they say that I need it capped, I will request to cancel
