Exclamation Good Attenuation and Noise Margin yet low speeds.

      Hi SkyUser Forums

I have been looking around there forums this afternoon in search to the answer to my problem and so far have not found it so thought I would post

I read various articles explaining Attenuation, Noise Margin, etc and so have a fair knowledge at how it works. This is why I was stumped to find my stats are:

      Downstream
      Connection Speed 12344 kbps
      Line Attenuation 27.0 db
      Noise Margin 7.3 db

From what I gather this is pretty good. How come then when I speed test I average 3mps?

      Whats going on?

I hope you can help many thanks

Re: Good Attenuation and Noise Margin yet low speeds.

attenuation is good - yes, but tbh SNR should be a bit higher to stay stable...

best post up full stats so we can take a gander at them....

      first question though are: -

      - are you running from your master/test socket?
      - are you wireless?

Re: Good Attenuation and Noise Margin yet low speeds.

Hey thanks for the quick reply

I am not wireless and im not sure what socket I am in.

I'm not in the socket that sky plugs into if that is the master socket.

Im installing all that stuff to post detailed stats. I will do so when I have them.

      Cheers

the master socket is (usually) the one by your front door/lounge - or the first point of entry of your phone line....

There are a number of possible reasons for a slow throughput (upload/download) compared to router sync.

You have some errors on your line but nothing to worry about. They're not the cause of your speed problem.

Wireless is a common cause but not relevant in your case. Next up would be incorrect TCP/IP settings on your PC. Run TCPOptimizer. Then make sure you test using a decent speedtest server such as this one to eliminate server overload as a possible cause.

Post back if your speeds are still low.

Re: Good Attenuation and Noise Margin yet low speeds.

Hey... did some of that stuff and it worked pretty well

TCP Optimizer Worked and I also used Tweaking for speed - dslreports.com

I'm pretty content with 7 but is there anything I can do to make it any faster?

Thanks for all your imformative and helpful posts

Well 7 is a lot better than 3 but it is still too low for your sync. You should be getting ~9875kbps.

Please run another test on the speedtest site suggested in my earlier post.

Re: Good Attenuation and Noise Margin yet low speeds.

      Hey

I ran the test several times and got some very vaired results.

On some of the test i got as low as 3500 and on others just about 9000

is there a reason for this inconsistancy?

      Thanks again

Yes there's bound to be - just a case of finding what

There are 4 main reasons for fluctuating speedtest results in rough order of likelihood:

      • poor wireless connection
      • overloaded speedtest server
      • line problems (dropping noise margin, line errors causing resends)
      • other generated traffic (malware, other LAN users)

You say you're wired not wireless and you are using a (usually) reliable test server. Your error levels, at least in the stats you posted, are too low to account for that level of deterioration and you haven't commented on your noise margin. That points to something on your PC/LAN using the bandwidth.

If it's not that then it's something pretty obscure.
