moved from pipex 8mb to sky max and its really slow

      Hi all,

First off the router seems crap, not sure if its just because its new, but i find port forwarding on it is hit and miss.

Anyway, with my old linksys router and pipex 8mb i used to get actual 8mb speeds and on newsgroups most of the time got download speeds of around 800-900k.

However with sky, after having it connected yesterday it seems really slow, and the router is reporting the line stats as

Port Status TxPkts RxPkts Collisions Tx B/s Rx B/s Up Time
      WAN PPPoA 44247 49112 0 921 4149 01:12:58
      LAN 10M/100M 43693 44771 0 1822 1919 01:13:42
      WLAN 11M/54M 17536 13188 0 3666 314 01:13:33

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 13813 kbps 764 kbps
Line Attenuation 35.0 db 19.5 db
Noise Margin 6.8 db 12.5 db

And on newsgroups im getting a max of around 250k, but sometimes as low as 60k.

      Any ideas?

Have you done a test on speedtest.net if not
can you do one and report the results?

Also are you sure they is no outages with your Usenet
      provider, who are you using?

I know when I moved to bulldogs 16mb package
the only way i could get a high transfer rate (2.2MBs)
on Usenet was to change to a provider who offered
20 connections the normal 8 connections just wouldn't
      use the full line speed

Well last week with easynews or hitnews,(i use both) i was getting 800k regularly.

I just hope that this bloody sky broadband doesnt turn out to be slower than pipex was.

You might also wish to try a different speed tester, in my experience they are all different. However this was written to test all broadband suppliers for speed for the magazine 'Which', I think?
Anyway check it out for yourselves: BroadbandChoices.co.uk

      Happy surfing

Re: moved from pipex 8mb to sky max and its really slow

      thanks, ill do that later.

Ive since had really strange fluctuating speeds, yesterday i was getting 1600k on the newsgroups! then last night i was getting 200k.

      Bizzar

am i right in thinking that 1600k is like 16mb kind of territory? Which is wierd as i should only be able to get 8mb apparently.

Re: moved from pipex 8mb to sky max and its really slow

Yeah they told me i could only get 8mbs, but i get around 1.5meg/sec on ftp and web downloads.

It all depends on what your line sync is at the said times as you may find it resyncs alot in the evenings or your noise margin falls well below 6db as it would tend to drop a little in the evenings due to general noise. My Db is 11.5 in the day but drops to 9.8 in the evenings but this is still way above the 6db that would cause problems.

Anyhow, Try the utility and see how many crc errors you have.
