Broadband goes down every 10 mins or so

I've had Sky broadband for 2 weeks or so. Previously on AOL which was completely trouble free - 24/7 no disconnections.

The Sky router fails very often (every 8 - 25 mins) and requires a manual reboot to reconnect. There is no obvious cause - I've tried all the suggested improvements (test socket etc) to no effect. It is a disaster. I don't need fast - but I do need reliable.

Even Mossywell's Bounceskyrouter fails to reconnect in many cases and a physical unplug/replug has to be done.

When I extracted password and user name and set these up on my own Netgear router (same model as Sky's minus the "T") it work very much better. No need for manual reboots - but the internet connection is still frequently lost (though less than with the Sky one.)

I cannot post stats of more than about 20 mins (for obvious reasons - this set represents a longish on-tme). Any inkling here as to what the problem is?

Specifically: should I ask Sky to cap the speed of the connection?

      Many thanks for any help.

(Ah - just tried to send and it's gone again!)

      Jim

Have you tried turning off UPnP? This often causes frequent disconnects.

Please could someone just say if there is any obvious visible problem in the stats above. Thanks.

No - nothing obvious in your stats though as you said, they cover a very short period.

I know you said UPnP was off but please check it just in case the change hasn't "stuck".

When you say "the router fails very often", what exactly are the symptoms? Do you lose all access to the router or just the internet connection? If the latter can you ping any sites? What happens to the lights on the front panel. Is there anything in your router log? How are you connected - wired or wireless? If wireless, do you get the same problem wired?

Re: Broadband goes down every 10 mins or so

Hi Saturday - thanks for your reply

      Yes - UPNP definitely off.

Symptoms are that the internet suddenly fails to connect.

Sometimes the "internet connected" light on the router stays on and it reboots successfully using Bounce skyrouter. When it's off, I lose all access to the router - by wireless or by network cable (I use both). Sometimes the "I" internet light is off and I have to manually reboot the router by disconnecting the mains lead. It usually picks up the connection again - but sometimes a further disconnection is required. As I mentioned, using the very similar Netgear router it almost always reconnects by itself (though it does also fail sometimes).

Your question: Is there anything in your router log? -I included an excerpt from the log in the first post - and in cases where it manages to reboot this typically shows something like

Re: Broadband goes down every 10 mins or so

Looks like you have either a faulty router (is it very hot?), faulty or incorrectly fitted filter, or you've an exchange problem.

BTW That's the Mossywell log isn't it not the router log? The router log is accessed through the router admin pages. Look for things like "LCP is up" "LCP is down", ignore UDP packet or DOS messages.

Re: Broadband goes down every 10 mins or so

Hot - but not ridiculously hot.

Advice on what to do next? Should I ask SKY to put a cap on the speed? (If so, what speed?)

Am I right that if it's forced to work at a lower speed I'd consistently get a better noise margin (which seems to be dangerously around 6.7 - 7.5 most of the time)?

Re: Broadband goes down every 10 mins or so

I have tried various rewirings and various filters.

I'm convinced the problem is with the line / exchange not within the house.

When I signed up the postcode/phone number predictor said that my line was capable of 2Mb but the speeds in my router stats are generally in the 5000 - 6500 kbps range. I suspect that this is simply more than the line can handle.

Speed is not an issue for me. I need a reliable always-on service.

Sky's email support service is VERY slow. I don't have weeks to waste finding out what the problem is. I'm not sure I can stand 2 months while they send me all their pre-prepared helpful hint sheets one after the other.

I just want to beg them to do something/anything to correct it quickly! I need your help so that I know exactly what to ask them for.
