      And ...........?

And are you wired or wireless (also asked earlier)?

And have you tried another filter as suggested?

It's hard to help you when you're leaping from issue to issue but not answering questions. At the moment you're going round in circles doing things like boosting noise margin when you're running Mossywell (in effect same thing - different mechanism) and worrying about the noise margin going down (which is normal - but you don't say by how much).

Not sure why you are getting critical. I am doing my best - and AM answering questions!

I have answered your wired/wireless question (in post 6 directly responding to the previous time you asked it) and I have answered the filter question (in post 10).

I have tried using wired and wireless both repeatedly. I mainly used wired. I have tried a number of different filters and in different configurations.

I have also repeatedly said what my noise margin was - and have also posted examples from the log showing it?

I'm only trying to get some advice as to what to do.

The only question I haven't responded to was your one about the router - because I didn't really understand what to do. Now that I have found it, the router log seems to show not very much. It doesn't record all the downs and ups, ons and offs - but this is it:

      Sat, 2000-01-01 00:00:37 - Initialize LCP.
Sat, 2000-01-01 00:00:37 - LCP is allowed to come up.
      Sat, 2000-01-01 00:00:56 - Administrator login successful - IP:192.168.0.3
      Sat, 2000-01-01 00:01:37 - Initialize LCP.
Sat, 2000-01-01 00:01:37 - LCP is allowed to come up.
      Sat, 2000-01-01 00:01:38 - CHAP authentication success
Sat, 2000-01-01 00:01:53 - Send out NTP request to time-g.netgear.com
      Sun, 2007-09-23 16:03:05 - Receive NTP Reply from time-g.netgear.com
      Sun, 2007-09-23 16:01:12 - Router start up

OK - sorry - I apologise. With the thread now running at 24 (long) posts it is getting hard to follow.

The router log is only showing the results since the last connection where the connection came up fine.

There are only so many reasons for a disconnection, apart from the very rare and unusual. In rough order of likelihood:
      • UPnP
      • Noise margin dropping to below ~5db
      • Wireless disconnections (poor connection)
      • Line errors building up
      • Faulty router/cable/filter/line
      • An exchange fault

You have turned UPnP off, you're using Mognuts/boosting your noise margin, you've changed filters and you don't have enough uptime to show errors.

My guess is that you have an intermittent line fault giving massive noise spikes or an exchange fault.

Re: Broadband goes down every 10 mins or so

Many thanks, Saturday. I really do appreciate all the help you and others freely offer here.

      Commenting on your list:

UPnP (I have turned that off)
Noise margin dropping to below ~5db (apparently not the issue - see below)
Wireless disconnections (poor connection) (Not this - as it happens on wired connection)
Line errors building up (seems less likely as there are very few errors reported in the stats/logs)
Faulty router/cable/filter/line (The disconnections still happen with another router; I have tried different cables and filters)
An exchange fault (this seems the only one left!)

I received an email from Sky this morning:

Sorry for the delay in replying to your message.
I have collaborated with our Tier 3 department, who have re-configured the settings on your broadband line in order to stabilise the connection. Please monitor your connection for the next 24hrs, and if you continue to experience any issues, feel free to contact us again.

I trust this helps however should yo u continue to experience technical difficulties, please reply to this email or call us on 08705 515 515. Lines are open 24 hours a day.

Decoding this, it meant that they have capped my line to 4608 kbps. This has raised the Noise margin figure from its previous average 6.9 - 7.9 to consistently over 12.

However, the problem persists. I still get the sudden cut-offs. The "i" light disappears from the router. i have to do a manual restart. It does look like an exchange or external line fault.

      Jim
