Thumbs down Getting a better sync rate from 2KM from exchange?

      Hi,

I currently signed up to SKY Broadband a few months ago but was wondering if I could get a better sync rate?

When I first signed up I got 7Meg for the first few months now its dropped to 6Meg...

When I signed up to SKY I was told I should be able to get around 13 - 14 Meg, however at the moment Ive only got 6 Meg , I'm 1.97 km away from the exchange (Straight Line) and these are my stats:

      ADSL Link
      Downstream 6080 kbps
      Upstream 768 kbps
      Connection Speed
      Line Attenuation Down: 43.0 db
      Line Attenuation Up: 27.5 db
      Noise Margin Down: 11.5 db
      Noise Margin Up: 14.0 db

Ive tried plugging the broadband directly into the master socket but the stats hardly change, I rang up sky and they said my noise margin is low but they cannot raise it as a fault...

If I was to call BT would they investigate it if I payed the service charge? Also my broadband doesn't seem to keep sync longer than a week, is this normal?

      Thanks for any assistance!

you wont see 12-14MB i'm afraid - more likely to be around 8-10MB on a perfect line...

i suggest posting ur full stats and then people can comment better...

Re: Getting a better sync rate from 2KM from exchange?

i assume you didnt read the link on my sig so here's the bit you need...

      Mognut’s Utility
      1. Go to the utility web site: Sky Netgear DG834GT utility version 0.4
      2. Click the “Get” detailed modem stats button and click “OK”.
      3. Enter the router login user name and password.
      4. At the next screen, click the back button on your browser.
      5. Click the “Download” netgear.cfg button.
      6. What you do next depends on your operating system. On Windows XP, click the “Save” button to save the file to your hard disk. (If you click “Open”, you may find that the file association is one that doesn’t handle carriage returns the same way as the router, hence the reason for saying “Save”.)
      7. Open the file in WordPad (not notepad).

Eeek! Reseting your router resets the statistics, so now you only have detailed information that covers the last 5 minutes which isn't very helpful. Sorry.

It probably takes a few hours of stats to build a picture of what might be going wrong, and preferably a full 24 hours.

Re: Getting a better sync rate from 2KM from exchange?

With your Attn the best you can expect is 6-7 on G.DMT. Previously, when you were getting 7, you may have been on ADSL2+. If you contacted Sky with a problem, you would be dropped to G.DMT. Possibly, you would be dropped back if it was noticed you line was not performing as it should. I am not sure of this though.

As your line, in theory, could support about 9mbps, a bit of work on your wiring may make a difference, that is if you were plugged into the Master socket and not the Test socket. You should plug in to the Test socket, behind the Master faceplate and take your stats from there.

If you do phone BT, Don't mention Sky Broadband or they will not help

Very high error levels. That would explain why you say your connection won't hold up for more than a week. With that level of errors you'd get a catastrophic build up after a period of time causing a rapid slowdown and then loss of internet connection.

And that's with just the router and microfilter plugged in using the supplied router cable only - no splitters, phones or via an extension? If so then apart from the small chance of a faulty filter or router cable, you have a serious problem with your BT line. Do you hear hissing or clicking on your voice calls?

I dont hear any hissing or crackling on the phone but 2 years I did have a major problem which they fixed fitting a master all in one filter...

Sorry should have made myself abit clearer, BT fitted a Filtering adapter on my line about 2 years ago...

I plug my cable directly into the already filtered faceplate it also filters all my other phones on the line..

Do I need to actually REMOVE the master socket and plug it in behind there with one of my filters I received from sky?

The only problem is if I do that for a few days I cant make or receive any calls.

      Thanks
