      On Max but only getting 8mb 750m from exchange

      Hey, I have been havng some issues with Sky BB since I got connected a couple of weeks ago. As you can see in the title I live 750m from my exhange but I am only getting download speeds of 8mb when I should be getting 16mb. I spent half an hour on the phone to tier 3 the other day who said this is the maximum my line could handle and I demanded that I was put on adsl2+ with my cap set at 16mb. But the person said they did and it was still only 8mb and causing to many errors and changed it back. Is this correct or should I be getting faster? I have posted my router stats below:

      Your on G.DMT mode.

      The max for that is 8Mb.

      Ring up Sky for ADSL2+ then you'll get higher speeds but higher line errors as well.

      Re: On Max but only getting 8mb 750m from exchange

      Your attenuation and noise margin are good but you do have some errors occuring which will increase on ADSL2+ with a faster connection.

      Total time = 1 days 21 hours 24 min 12 sec
      SF = 9918624
      CRC = 1362
      LOS = 982

      LOF = 0
      ES = 9443

      I would start by checking out your telephone wiring, plug router direct into the test socket behind the master socket face plate which will disconnect all extension wiring and run from there for a while and see if things improve. Needs to be a good few hours of heavy downloading to test it out. If things improve check that only 2 wires are connected to any extension sockets to pins 2 and 5 at both ends and get rid of any plug in extension leads.
      Once you are sure you have cleared the errors, then try getting Sky to switch it over again.

      Re: On Max but only getting 8mb 750m from exchange

      Hi Koala5, thanks for the reply. The high errors might be because I have been messing around with Sky Netgear DG834GT utility version 0.4 over the past few days and I used it to set my line to adsl2+ and only changed it back to G.DMT before I got the stats. I have just reset the router and I shall do some browsing around and I shall post my new stats which will probably be more accurate below.

      Re: On Max but only getting 8mb 750m from exchange

      Stats look Ok, but need to be over a longer period of time with heavy downloading if possible. Also you cant force the line to ADSL2+ if Sky have set GDMT it only works the other way round ie you can set GDMT if you are already on ADSL2+. Still cant understand why you are only getting 8mb as your attenuation is quite reasonable at 30db, I would still try the wiring and test socket thing if I were you. My stats below show I could get over 15mb with an attenuation of 34db, so I think you should be getting more! I have 8mb because I am on mid package.

      Hey Koala5, how do my stats look now that I have been connected for longer? So from what you are saying I arent wrong in thinking that I should be getting faster download speeds.

      Is the only thing which can affect speed the attenuation? So if this is low you should get a good speed?

      Re: On Max but only getting 8mb 750m from exchange

      Not exactly there are many things that can effect speed, attenuation and line errors being 2 of them but you seem to be pretty much error free and your attenuation is reasonable, so I cant understand why you are not getting a faster connection. Router could be reporting rubbish when it says you are on ADSL2+ it might be worth reseting it again, even do a full rest by pushing a pin in the little hole on the back. Or possibly Sky may have capped your speed but then I would expect your SNR figure to go up.

      Confused!

      he's not capped, as you said SNR would be higher as would max rate on the stats....

      Re: On Max but only getting 8mb 750m from exchange

      If you look back at all the stats given in this thread, I think it's clear that the line is capped, at 8478kbit/sec.

      My interpretation of these stats is that there is a considerable amount of white noise on the line (hissing) but virtually no burst interference (clicking and buzzing) and the white noise varies in intensity, probably on a daily cycle.

      With a line like that, finding the optimal signal rate is a bit different from other lines. To begin with, as the signal rate is reduced, the unrecoverable error rates reduce. But then you get quite an abrupt point at which the unrecoverable errors just disappear. You can see from the last set of stats that error correction has been active, and has managed to correct every single error in a 24 hours period.

      But the flip-side of this kind of line is that it would only take a very small increase in signal rate to get a sizeable increase in unrecoverable errors. Increase the signal rate to 10Mbit/sec and you'd probably lose sync for a period of time every day.

      That's what I reckon - the line is capped, but is probably capped at the right level, even though at some times of the day, it looks for all the world that the line could handle a much higher speed.
