      evenings

      Hi everyone,

Just wondered if anyone could help.

I switched from bt to sky £5/month a few days ago. My connection was slow and kept disconnecting. I ran the tcpopimizer program today which amazingly increased my speed from 1.4 to 5.2!! (I previously had about 2.5 with bt).

My problem now is evenings. Tonight seems to be the same as every other evening - VERY slow and keeps disconnecting. For example now I have dropped from 5.2 to 205!!!! Almost unuseable. The weird thing though is that in my router statistics it says I am connected at 6400kbps. How can that be, if I am only getting 205?

Please help. I requested my mac code last night, but found this forum today and would like to see if I can fix this before I go to another provider.

      Regards Jayne.

right. i think ive done it right. here are my stats. BUT my connection has just gone back up to 5.9 now so these stats are from that speed, not from the poor speed.

      Re: evenings

you may have done this already but do you have one of the master sockets with 2 screws on the front ? the test socket is behind, using this would rule out your internal wiring.

also you could be getting interferance from some items in your house, if you are getting the problems at the same time every day it could be something switching on and causing noise

there isnt anything that switches on. im sure it isnt that. the problem is on and off all evening.

i will plug into the test socket now and keep testing throughout the evening.

      Re: evenings

Let the router work for a day or so then get stats again so they relate to a decent time period and will give a better indication of any errors you may have.
Also how are you determining the dl speed ? If its any of the speedchecker sites then they can be unreliable when they are busy ( evenings).
I think is more likely to be related to your SNR which is quite low and will get lower in the evenings, again because the internet is busy.
Try your router plugged into the test socket ( behind the master ) as this will eliminate any possible problems with your internal wiring. A set of stats from both the master and the test would give a good indication of internal wiring problems
      cheers

      thanks for your reply dave.

      what is snr?

i use A BELTRÓNICA Telecom - speedometer speed test download upload internet speedtest broadband bandwidth test dsl connection speed IP address check speed for my speed tests, although in the evening when it is bad, I don't really need to test because it is so slow it hardly works and keeps disconnecting.

      Re: evenings

SNR = signal to noise ratio.
Its near the top in your stats. The higher the number the better for a stable connection. If it drops below 6.something then the router will lose its connection. You can keep an eye on it in realtime by opening the router homepage and clicking on the show statistics button at the bottom of the page. It will refresh every 10 secs or so.
      cheers
      dave
