You need to change it to a figure that will mean it stays above ~7db right through the day. Of course, depending on what time of day you do it, a different figure would be appropriate e.g. if you change it at a quiet time such as the morning then you may need to increase it to 12-14db. At a noisy time, just to 8-10db. You just need to try a figure and see if that holds up through the daily noise margin cycle.

However, increasing the noise margin is a fix not a cure. You would have less of a noise margin problem (and a faster connection) if you were to resolve the high number of errors you have on your line.

This is the high number of errors Jayne.

Was this test done connected to the TEST socket (behind the main one) - if so, I believe this means there could be problems between you and the exchange as connecting directly to the test socket eliminates any other internal extensions in your home. (If i'm wrong, someone on here will correct me!)

If those results are not from the test socket, but from the main (front socket) or an extension, then you need to try the TEST socket - if the stats then show less errors - the problem lies with the internal wiring, which is easier to fix. (ringer wire, cat5 cable etc etc)

Also the attenuation for your downloads, is lower than mine = 37db (which is good) but your router is syncing at a much lower speed, which would indicate issues. I believe with your att.on mid you should get full 8meg sync, and up to 10meg on max.

As the problems happen in the evenings, it could well be interference from appliances not in your house but in a neighbour's that are causing the problems. Again ringer wire / poor cabling will pick up this interference like an aerial and upset your broadband signal.

I take it you have done the basics - have filters on all phones/skybox etc?

      Re: evenings

I was going to start a new thread for my problem but it seems to fit well here. I've noticed a huge reduction in my connection speed in the evenings. It happens at the same time every night, usually between 7.30pm and 8pm. The internet connection slows to a dead stop at times going from a good 3.5-6MB/s to less than 1MB/s. At times it is as slow as dial-up! I've no iodea why this is but I am guessing that Sky is traffic shaping. Can anyone suggest a solution?

Also, my wireless connection speed is severely reduced in the evening. It goes from 54MB/s to 1MB/s at around 8pm so to get any connection at all I have to move my computer upstairs and go wired. I can't think that it's a problem with the hardware as the connection is so good during the day.

EDIT: I should say that I have tested the router by connecting to the test socket in the master socket and the problem persists.

      Re: evenings

Well, if you're talking about web browsing speeds, it's not going to be down to traffic shaping. (Do Sky actually do traffic shaping?)

If your wireless problems are only occuring during the evening, then it may be your neighbours coming home from work and using their wireless equipment on the same channel as you. Try changing channel. There's nothing inherent to wireless networking that makes it go slower in the evenings compared to the daytime, but wireless interference can get worse if there a lot of people, all actively communicating over a wireless network, all sharing the same channel number.

Incidentally, the wireless connection speed which your PC reports isn't anything like the speed at which data can actually travel through that network. Not even close. I can't get more than 16Mbit/sec on a wireless connection supposedly running at 54Mbit/sec, and that's the very best result after checking all 13 channels, with the PC in line of sight of the router.

They're bound to as part of their network management but (so far) it must be with a very light touch because I've seen no trace of it.
