      newbie help plz

      hi all

just got my netgear router from sky and want to know the best way to connect to my pc. the tower is about 5ft from phone line and i only have 1.1 usb and no ethernet port. currently connected via usb into ntl/vigin media modem works fine but cost to much now. (£17.99 2mb) i was just searching for ways to connect and so far i see a can connect using usb ethernet adapter/wireless adapter or pci card but im not an expert on pc's and dont know which way to go. dont need to be wireless would just like to know the best way to connect. btw ive been looking on ebay and usb adapter is about £3.49. netgear WG111T is anywhere from £4 to £18 and netgear wg311 pci card is from£6.50 to £20. any help would be greatfully received.

      thanks in advance

Like many other users, in my experience PCI card is much better than USB.

I've used both an obscure cheapo brand 11b and now a Netgear 11g model, both far superior to the Netgear USB (which itself is better than another brand of USB I tried).

Seeing as your PC is so close to the router, why not just save yourself the trouble and get a PCI Ethernet card and a 3m Ethernet cable? Ethernet cards are as cheap as chips, are easier to set up and much more reliable than wireless.

      Re: newbie help plz

If your PC is close to where you want the router, which you say, then the best and possibly cheapest solution would be to buy and fit a cheap network card to the PC (~£5) and connect with an ethernet cable (~£1 per metre). Don't use wireless unless you have to.

The only slight complication is working out what sort of cards your PC will take. If you only have USB 1 it sounds like your PC is fairly old. Google it or find the manual. Once you know what sort, cards are really easy to fit.

EDIT: must type faster than James67
