Question Connection to Sky only when outside call made!

Hi, Can anyone answer my query. I have Sky broadband and a BT land line. I have to make a outgoing call out every time I want my router to connect to Sky broadband. Once the call has been made the connection tends to remain in place until I turn my computer off. I have been in contact with BT who tested my line and advise that it seems to be a sky problem.

      Anyone with a similar problem??

Sounds like some BT buck-passing there. Or they could be saying that the voice service on the line is OK, so any other problems have to be referred to Sky.

To be honest, I'm struggling to see how this kind of problem could actually occur. I wonder if it might be a strange extension wiring problem, something like a mix up between the connectors labelled 2 and 3 on the extension terminals inside the master socket.

Assuming you've got the type of master socket where you can remove the lower half of the faceplate, you could try removing that and testing the router in the test socket that the faceplate plugs into. That would prove one way or the other if the problem is down to the extension wiring.

Re: Connection to Sky only when outside call made!

This problem has been raised on the forum a few times. One of the causes was found to be a bad bit of wiring between the house and the road, a BT problem. Unfortunately, BT and Sky do not enjoy a very cosy relationship, which is why anyone calling BT is advised Don't mention Sky broadband. Invariably, if you do and the phone is working at all, you will be told it is a Sky fault, whether it is or not.

In saying that, the fault could be within your own house wiring, so it is advisable to check from the test socket. If the problem persists then the fault is with the phone line, if it goes, it is your internal wiring that is faulty. It is also advisable to use different filters, just in case one is faulty. If you have the cable from a dial-up modem, you could use this to connect direct to the Test socket, this would rule out faulty filters completely.

I had the same problem a couple of years ago, when a call was made, the voltage increase along the cable improved my stats, once the call was finished my stats would drop slowly until the router eventually disconnected.

Had BT engineer round and after showing him my problem and advising him it looked like a dodgy connection somewhere outside he (as advised by another user) he managed to track it down to a break in a poorly fitted cable on the pole.

Apparently, when the call is made it hops the crack in the cable and stablises it for a short time, then it slowly breaks down again. This could be anywhere from the exchange to the cabinet or from the cabinet to the pole, BT are the only ones who can help if this is the case.

Do what I did, when he comes, have a nice coffee and a bacon butty on the go, show him this report and watch your stats when you are on and off the phone, hopefully he will then hunt down the problem with a full belly and a happy smile.
