Just got Max but it's rediculously slow...

I've read a few other threads but they don't seem to be quite as bad as this.

I'll just explain a few things first.

We had to wait about a month for Max to be connected and that was because there was either a problem in the line or no existing line underground (they didn't tell us). This resulted in lots of roadworks.

We are using the router and a Belkin adapter because it's the only practical way of accessing the internet.

It took me 4 hours to download 100MB on my PS3.

To get to the computer and the PS3 (which are in separate rooms) the signal only has to go through a very thin ceiling.

Now...I've just done a speed test and this is just ridiculously slow. Observe.

      Download Speed: 42 kbps (5.3 KB/sec )
      Upload Speed: 638 kbps (79.8 KB/sec )

Something tells me this isn't quite right. So basically my question is, do you know what the problem could be? I've got the TCP Optimizer from speedguide but I don't understand what to do with it.

I'm not sure what other information you might need.

I hope that makes some sort of sense, thanks in advance.

you have lots and lots of error which will greatly affect your download speed, you will need to try your master socket/ test socket as this will rule out you home wiring (which is prob the cause)

Re: Just got Max but it's rediculously slow...

OK, I've just checked and we only have one phone socket in the house and it doesn't look anything like this one http://www.skyuser.co.uk/images/mastersocket.gif

Baring in mind the house is pushing thirty years old and we've only just moved in I don't think there is a test socket behind it.

If it makes any difference I checked the router stats yesterday and they were as follows.

/usr/sbin/adslctl: ADSL driver and PHY status
Status: Showtime Channel: FAST, Upstream rate = 764 Kbps, Downstream rate = 5031 Kbps

You have serious line problems somewhere. They are not still digging up the road are they? First call BT and ask them to do a line check as your voice line is making noises. Don't mention broadband or they will not bother.

At the moment you are on ADSL2+, so don't phone Sky yet or they will just take you off it and cap your connection. You can do this yourself using Mognuts utility, if it becomes necessary.
