Red face installing broadband with extension lead help

Hi, I have got sky broadband and have tried to install it. The problem is that the phone socket is downstairs and the pc is upstairs. I plugged a microfilter into the main socket and then plugged in an extension lead. I plugged a microfilter into this and the attached it to the pc. Whe ii do this, however, the internet light on the modem doesn't come on. When i plugged the modem into the main socket without the extension lead, the modem worked fine. I bought a new extension lead thinking it might be the problem, but with the same result. Do i need a special extension lead for this instead of a plain phone extension lead? Can anyone help? Thanking you in advance for any help.

You really want to avoid using any kind of telephone extension lead they can cause all sorts of issues the worst being the introduction of noise on your line and your sync speed will be effected. The ideal solution would be to get some cat5e cable and hardwire an extension upstairs using this and a telephone socket next to your pc then connect the router, via a filter, to this. I've done this and it works fine.
Have a read of the cabling / faceplate section for more info.
      cheers

ps you only need a filter after the ext lead not at both ends if you have to use the ext lead for now

My usual setup uses yards of crappy extension wiring and I still get a good connection speed so this isn't always such a problem.

I may be wrong but you only need one filter just in the main box

As Dholdi and Coopes says, you only need one microfilter.

I have mine the same as I've only got one socket in the house!

Just plug your extension in - no filter yet, run it to your computer, chuck a filter on and plug your modem on to that.

Take your router downstairs and plug it into the Master socket through a filter. Your internet light should come on and sync with the exchange. You do not need to be plugged into your PC to do this test.

If it does not come on, phone Sky and tell them your internet light is not coming on and ask them to do a line test. If it does come on, your extensions are faulty. Post back with the result.
