      Bb Max, Nightly Disconections And Morning Connection Problems

      I've read similar threads and still think my problems are different so I'll let you guys have a think if you like,

      I got connected to BB Max 16/08/07 and have been using my original Netgear DG834PN router which I've had for over a year and has worked brilliantly on both Tiscali and Bulldog broadband.

      However, the router drops its connection around 8/9pm everynight and I have to go to 192.168.0.1/Diagnostics/Reboot to reintialize a new connection and sometimes this doesn't even work until the 3rd attempt.

      Likewise, the mornings see another spree of connection attempts as the router connects fine and the internet just crawls even though my Outlook Express/Sky POP account works fine.

      Finally, the strange thing is between the morning and nightly disconnections the BB is fairly sound, downloads are hitting 200KB/s, router connects at 4928 kbps although Speedtest says 2395 kbps with 62 ms ping.

      My router is connected directly into the master using the supplied microfilter; the phone base and sky tv are plugged into the telephone side of the filter using a 1-2 splitter.

      I'm approximatly 1.9miles away from my exchange.

      Thank you for looking;

      Re: Bb Max, Nightly Disconections And Morning Connection Problems

      Errors will cause disconnections but your stats cover too short a period to be sure what your error level is. They don't look too bad though and in any case, disconnections caused by errors don't usually happen at regular times of day.

      The UPnP "bug" will also cause disconnections but most commonly these will happen very regularly, every 15 minutes or so, occasionally not as frequent as that. To be safe, have you turned UPnP off?

      If you're getting disconnections at certain times of day e.g. evenings then look to a falling noise margin as the problem. See the first sticky in my signature.

      If the disconnections are completely random and fairly frequent then it may be intermittent noise spikes either caused by an external influence (e.g. thermostat kicking in) or a wiring/router cable fault.

      From the info you've given, a noise margin problem looks the most likely cause.

      Re: Bb Max, Nightly Disconections And Morning Connection Problems

      I've just turned off the router UPnP and went back to the Router status page where like usual most of the ADSL port stats were blank even though the modem stats recorded 'connected'. I've attached a screenshot for you to look at, any ideas are appreciated,

      thanks again,

      p.s. - when this normally happens, i have to click on the 'connection status' button at the bottom of the screen and click disconnect/connect to allow the LCP up and if this doesn't work then its a case of rebooting the router.

      Hello again, I've just taken my router stats at about 23:20pm and the SF value has dropped from 20000 ish to 5880. btw, my connection was lost again during the evening and my WLAN connection kept dropping even though the WPA is all in place and working.

      thanks;

      Nothing unusual about that. Just shows you weren't connected when the browser was refreshed.

      SF stands for superframes. They're not errors but are in effect a measure of the amount of traffic passed. The CRC error levels are relative to the number of superframes.

      According to your stats your router was disconnected/rebooted 2 minutes earlier. To get a decent error level you need at least 6 hours of hard use, preferably a day or so. If you can't get the connection to hold that long does the info I gave earlier point towards a likely cause for the disconnections?

      Hey Saturday,

      I turned off the UpUn on the router and I have been monitoring the attenuation which has gone from 6db to 9.5db, it hastn't gone from over/under 5db from when it first connected it so that means it won't have disconnected? is that right?

      Also, the connection has been live for over 18 hours so heres my latest stats, thanks again;

      Re: Bb Max, Nightly Disconections And Morning Connection Problems

      Your noise margin will typically "swing" by 3-5db through the course of a day, repeating the cycle each day, so don't worry about that. The thing to ensure is that it stays up above 5-6db as a minimum - higher than that if there are line problems.

      Looking at your stats, the error levels are fine so it looks unlikely that they are to blame for any disconnections. And your router has been connected for 18 hours so that's looking promising.

      See how it goes over the next day or so.
