Packet Loss in the evening and total disconnection

At the same time every evening, both my dad and me are suffering huge amounts of packet loss and eventually a total internet loss, which we cant regain for anything up to an hour. It happens between 8 and 9 every evening, and as we both primarily use the internet for gaming, its leaving us in abit of a pickle. I've tried changing the MTU size to 1492 as suggested on another thread, but that hasn't solved the problem.

I rang up customer service today and they fobbed me off with the usual 'check your microfilters' so that was a complete waste of time.

Any ideas would be much appreciated.

My master has one port, to which a kind of adapter is fitted, and 2 cables are coming out of it, one of which is our connection to the Sky HD box and the other is the broadband line. And as I mentioned earlier, the connection is shared over two computers as it has been since we've had broadband.

Re: Packet Loss in the evening and total disconnection

right, the filter should go into the phone socket first, then piggie-back the 2 way splitter off that - the Sky box isnt being filtered so will be interfering with he BB signal - give that a go and see what happens.....

you also appear to be capped to 5MB too - have u had issues speed wise before?

EDIT: just re-read what u said about an adapter - do u meana 2-way phone splitter or do u mean filter?.....

Re: Packet Loss in the evening and total disconnection

I'll give that a go tomorrow, although I'm pretty sure we've tried it before.

Yeah, we are capped at 5mb.

As with many people, I had awful pings when playing online. Eventually I got through to tier 3 and they capped my speed at 5mb to stop errors building up on my line because i was receiving speeds of around 7mb when my line could only take 5m. This lowered my ping by about 5ms so I'm still in the 60-70ms range, and used to get 20ms with BT.

EDIT: I think its a 2 way phone splitter, as we have one phone at the front of the house, and another at the other end (they both have the same number).

Check your noise margin isn't dropping too low in the evening (a common problem). See the first sticky in my signature.

Re: Packet Loss in the evening and total disconnection

definately put the filter in first, then u can put the splitter in the phone side of this and keep the 2 phones etc....

as for pings, you can get tier 3 to lower the max delays to 16 or 8 perhaps

Re: Packet Loss in the evening and total disconnection

      A little update,

I monitored the noise margin last night, and it didn't drop below what was mentioned in your sticky, but I also didn't lose connection, so I think that is what I'm dealing with here.

I also tried putting a filter in, then the splitter, but it gave me no internet :P

Re: Packet Loss in the evening and total disconnection

well, the router still goes into the filter - unless ur then running a plug in extention to get to the router - in which case its a setup issue....
