      McAfee Problem

I have been a subscriber to Sky Broadband Connect for 11 months and not experienced any problems until yesterday. All was working well until late evening on 04/09/07 but I could not connect to the internet yesterday 05/09 or when I tried again this evening 06/09. I tried Windows Restore and chose 04/09 as the restore point and to my amasement I was able to connect to the internet again but my McAfee is reporting that I am not protected. On choosing the McAfee "Fix" button it whirs around for a few seconds and the reports "No updates available" but still tells me I am not protected. I would be grateful if someone could advise how I resolve this problem.

I can give you a very good piece of advice here. This will save you a lot of trouble in the future. 1) Uninstall McAfee. May not be easy, but just do whatever it takes. 2) Install AVG and Zonealarm, both are free and just work with no hassle.

      Re: McAfee Problem

McAfee is free also, and he's had 11 months of no problems so why change?? I've had it for 7 years and had no grief so no idea what issues everyone else has with it!!!

Sky have a number to call McAfee directly setup for Sky users and they may be able to help with the query - otherwise log into ur McAfee account via the website and download it again from the site. It'll download the latest version and hopfully fix ur issues...

as for uninstalling McAfee, you just go through Add/Remove programs and remove it - takes 2 minutes.....unlike Norton System Hog 2007!!!

      Re: McAfee Problem

Thanks for the advice. Although I downloaded and ran McAfee Virtual Technician it was unable to fix the problem, but mysteriously McAfee auto update downloaded an update that required a reboot and lo and behold all is working again. It would appear that McAfee had downloaded an earlier update that caused the initial problem and had I not used Windows restore to get things working again I would not have been able to connect to the internet to download the fix. I emailed Sky support asking for their help in resolving the initial problem but apart from receiving an automated acknowledgement to my email have heard nothing since.

If you are lucky, like most AV programs it is tightly bound with the Registry, hence the need for a dedicated removal tool.
