Poor speeds on Max-only 1.4km from Exchange

      Hi all,

I came of holiday to find that my Sky BB has finally been activated.

      However.....

My speeds don't appear to be very good.

On Saturday I thought I'd try something downloading off of usenet to max the connection out, but the speeds were very erratic according to DUMeter, and was fluctuating between 150kb/sec and 250kb/sec.

My previous (non LLU) 2Mb line at my old house would download from Usenet at a constant rock solid 245k (almost bang on 2 meg), but now using the same PC on Sky BB I'm not getting much better.

Last night the usenet speeds seemed to have improved and stabilised slightly, and I was getting about 600kb down.

I did a speed test on Robin Walker's site which showed a pretty consistent 6000k down, but seeing as I am (according to Samknows anyway) 1.45 km from the exchange I had hoped for at least 10meg down.

I'm using ethernet from router>gigabit switch>to PC, so I suppose I could try running a lead direct from the router to see if that makes a difference.

      Here's my router stats:

      System Up Time 55:24:31
Port Status TxPkts RxPkts Collisions Tx B/s Rx B/s Up Time
      WAN PPPoA 25415949 36654854 0 6840 18565 44:37:41
      LAN 10M/100M 39385492 27440300 0 16917 9246 55:24:29
      WLAN 11M/54M 0 0 0 0 0 00:00:00

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 5760 kbps 768 kbps
Line Attenuation 48.0 db 30.5 db
Noise Margin 11.8 db 14.0 db
From what I gather, it's the 48db line attenuation that may be the issue?

The router is already plugged into what I'm sure is the master socket, which is right at the front of the house. The phone is plugged into the voice port, and that's all that's on it.

There's already one of these types of sockets as the master socket:

But I suppose I could order one of those if only to eliminate the socket (unless there are any tests I can do on my existing one?)

      Cheers.

      All thoughts/suggestions are welcome.

Detailed stats will give us a better idea of whats going on, use the proceedure below to extract them. Best done after a few hours of downloading. Heavy usage should show up any problems on the line.

Go to the utility web site: Sky Netgear DG834GT utility version 0.4 Click the “Get” detailed modem stats button and click “OK”.
Enter the router login user name and password.
At the next screen, click the back button on your browser.
      Click the “Download” netgear.cfg button.
What you do next depends on your operating system. On Windows XP, click the “Save” button to save the file to your hard disk. (If you click “Open”, you may find that the file association is one that doesn’t handle carriage returns the same way as the router, hence the reason for saying “Save”.)
Open the file in WordPad (not notepad).

      Thanks again.

that should be as close to zero as possible - have you tried a filter actually in the test socket incase the filtered faceplate u have is faulty?

      Wow-thanks for the fast reply!

I haven't, but I will try that in a minute.

I've just realised those stats are from last week....

still high!! give it a bash in ur test socket with one of the supplied filters and see what happens. Can't guarantee the speed will go up but if the errors stay down hen the issue lies with the faceplate...

Sorry-are you suggesting I put a filter in the voice socket and then connect the router to that?

no - remove the faceplate from ur master and there'll be another socket inside. This is that test socket. Put the filter in there with purely ur roter on it (no phone/TV)...

They are still high but you have carried the old errors forward. You will have to re-boot or power cycle your router till you clear the old errors to give a true picture. As Ian the enemy says, plug into the test socket.
