SKY BB speed has been cut in half!

      Hi All

I've been having a real adventure with SKY BB since I signed up!!

OK, here briefly is my tale (of woe!)

Connected last week having signed up to MAX

Initially I was getting speeds of around 12mbps excellent I thought BUT I was also getting those notorious drop out problems every few minutes, having fiddled about for a day or so with no luck I used the advice elsewhere on this forum and obtained my username and password and reverted back to my old ADSL/USB modem. But knowing this was a breach of T&C's after a couple of days I decided to give the SKY router another and 'wayhay' it's working now, no dropouts at all but the speed has dropped to around 6mbps???

i've also noticed that my noise margin has jumped from 7 to 15?

Reading though another post I notice a comment about the Mode being set to G.DMT which apparently means that the max you can get is only 8mbps and it looks like mine is set to that too! (I used 'Mognuts Router utility' to find that out)

So I'm left wondering if those happy chaps at SKY have changed this setting as I was certainly getting a much faster speed to begin with??

HAY, what do you know, as I'm tying this my connection has dropped!!! Looks like the old problem is back

Getting back to my original question anyone have any idea why my speed would have dropped, is it SKY changing my settings?

Andy (Who is now seriously regretting his move to SKY!)

Known bug, try rebooting the router.

Have you turned off the UPnP?

      http://www.skyuser.co.uk/tools/UPnP/

You have possibly been capped can you try the test socket, in the master socket and report your stats?

Re: SKY BB speed has been cut in half!

      Hi NewsreadeR

      Further to my above post...

I've just phoned SKY and got straight through to the fabled 'tier 3' support
Obviously helps to phone at 1:45 am!!

It seems that is was auto capped in order to irradicate the drop out problem, which was due to my exchange not being able to handle the speed. My line noise level is good so they've been able to up the speed a little and it's now at the max that my exchange can handle.

So it looks like my problems have been resolved

I would also like to that I found the SKY tech staff to be very helpful and friendly, especially for 2am in the morning and I'd like thank the member of staff I spoke to for her help

Re: SKY BB speed has been cut in half!

      Hi Rich

Are these the stats you mean?

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 7680 kbps 768 kbps
Line Attenuation 34.0 db 21.5 db
Noise Margin 12.1 db 13.0 db

I know you can get a much fuller list via Mognuts Router utility do you mean that?

To be honest i think it's the local exchange that's the problem. From what the tech person could see I'm pushing the max speed that it can handle, I may need to slow down a little, but any suggestions you have are more than welcome

      hi andy,

yep, should be the fuller stats,
there is also a link somewhere that should let you know the status of your exchange (but cannot remember where)

As you say, it may be to do with the exchange but never hurts to let these guys have a look at the router stats (they are all very good on here and i wish i had read this forum before i had my line capped)

      good luck

I don't know if it shows, but I've turned the wireless off as I don't need it and Upnp as I was advised to do so.

So far the connection has remained in place since this morning's reboot

Thanks in advance for any advice offered

Re: SKY BB speed has been cut in half!

      Hi Andy,

stats look good to me, mabey if you post them again later tonight just to check but i think the call to sky may be in order. i think you should be able to higher download speed with the line att (but this may be because of the cap that line noise is 34)

does look like may be exchange after all

but hey, its always worth checking

if you do speak to sky, post back and let me know the outcome

      good luck
