      Sky's equipment at exchange...

Hi, not sure if anyone can advise me on this but I'm not sure if there is anything I can do...

Recently Sky installed their own equipment at my local exchange (Blunsdon, Swindon). Before this my connected speed on the router via BT's normal ADSL equipment was at a max of around 4.5k (1.5 miles away), on the speedtest.com website was downloading at around 3.9k with approx 70 ping on the wireless connection to the PC. This connection was stable and would be on for days at a time with no probs.

Since Sky's equipment has been installed the connected speed initially is better at around 5.5k (they told me I had gone from connect to mid but this makes no difference as far as I can see) buuuut... this rarely lasts long (any time of day/night), often drops to around 1k and often disconnects, requiring frequent reboots of the router to come to life. The ping on the speedtest website has gone up to 100+ and I have noticed the noise margin has dropped from around 10db to approx 7db. The connection now always drops at 6pm and 8am on the dot (I know more users = less bandwith etc. but the fact it is exactly on the hour every day makes me suspicious that it is on some kind of timer!).

I am just wondering if there is anything I can do to fix this, would Sky be able to help? I have been through the mill a few times, know the drill and the difficulties in getting Tier 3 etc from problems months ago... Before I call them does anyone know if they will be able to fix this or if I have the face the fact that I am now stuck with a crappy connection due to Sky's intervention at the exchange!

Many thanks in advance for any help, much appreciated!!

      Cheers,

      James.

BT's ADSL MAX product has a kind of automatic system that adapts to line performance, Sky's doesn't which means your best bet is to contact Sky so your line can be manually configured to stop the dropouts.

      Re: Sky's equipment at exchange...

Sorry! Speedtest.net - The Global Broadband Speed Test is the site I test on, not that other one!

Also, not sure if it is relevant but Sky got BT to check my line a few months back and they found a problem at the junction box in my neighbourhood and patched my line directly to the exchange, which as well as fixing disconnections also doubled my speed!

Thanks Mr Stabby (nice name ), I fear you may be right and a long night of calling Sky may be in order soon... I'm just not sure why my latency etc. increased on the same line to the same exchange, seems odd to me!
