      Download Speed Collapses

      I have had this problem on two occasions since changing over from connect to max.
      The connection is stable with the router stats showing a sync speed around 15mbps and a nm of around 8. This was at 19.00 hrs and the router had been connected for a number of hours after I had been messing around with Mognuts.

      When I switched the laptop back on at 22.00, browsing the internet was very very slow. The router stats were showing a sync speed of 14.5mbps but the nm had fallen to 6.9. More importantly, the line had dropped as the connection time was only 1.5 hrs.
      I could only get the actual speed back by rebooting the router.
      My question is why is the "user" speed so slow when the stats appear to be ok.

      Re: Download Speed Collapses

      There are several possible cause's. Firstly check that uPNP is turned off on the front page of the router menu this is a known bug. Second falling noise margin which can happen in the evening. Thirdly a build up of line errors, the sync speed shown in your stats just means basically that you are synced with the exchange at a certain speed, its bit like saying you are tuned to 98.8FM on your radio but dosen't tell you alot about the quality of the signal being recieved. If it is poor then your router will recieve corupt data which will have to be retransmitted, the more information that has to be retransmitted the slower your connection will appear.
      Post your setailed stats they may show something up.

      Go to the utility web site: Sky Netgear DG834GT utility version 0.4 Click the “Get” detailed modem stats button and click “OK”.
      Enter the router login user name and password.
      At the next screen, click the back button on your browser.
      Click the “Download” netgear.cfg button.
      What you do next depends on your operating system. On Windows XP, click the “Save” button to save the file to your hard disk. (If you click “Open”, you may find that the file association is one that doesn’t handle carriage returns the same way as the router, hence the reason for saying “Save”.)
      Open the file in WordPad (not notepad).

      Hi. Thanks for reply.
      uPnP is turned off.
      These are my stats at 16.00 hrs. My tested speed is about 12.5mbps.
      I will post the stats I get later during the evening to give an idea of the increase in noise levels.

      Re: Download Speed Collapses

      Ok I think I have spotted a problem, overall your stats dont look too bad but during the 15 minute period below your CRC errors shot up! In an ideal world they should exceed 0.1% of the SF "superframes" transmitted, during this 15 minute period yours were about 6 times that.

      Previous 15 minutes time = 15 min 0 sec
      SF = 56004
      CRC = 308
      LOS = 0
      LOF = 0
      ES = 6

      First thing to try is to plug your router into the "test socket" which in most case's can be found behind the face plate of you BT master socket, thats the first socket as the line comes in the house. When you take the face plate off it should disconnect any extension wiring which can be a source of problems and connects you straight onto the BT line. Hence if things improve you know it is your wiring causing a problem.
      One fix for hard wired extension problems is to ensure only 2 wires are connected in the master socket to the back of the face plate and in all extension box's as well, these 2 wires should be connected to pins 2 and 5. Any others can be removed because they are know to cause noise problems on broadband and they are not required anyway. One culprit is usually an orange and white wire connected to pin 3, its a ring wire used for old phones and not required these days.

      Re: Download Speed Collapses

      Bt have recently fitted a new master socket and replaced all the wiring to it.
      I have fitted a Solwise ADSL Faceplate Splitter and the only other device used, apart from the router, is a wireless telephone connected to the face plate via an answering machine.
      I will connect the router to the "test socket" this evening and post the results tomorrow.
      Thanks again.

      edit. How long is it usually necessary to leave only the router connected via the test socket?

      Re: Download Speed Collapses

      Ok if you only use the one socket then when you remove the lower half of the face plate then check there isn't any "historical" extension wiring connected to the back of the lower half of the face plate. If there is and your not using it you might as well disconnect it.

      You may have to reset the router to get rid of the old errors, they are still showing. Keep the connection to the test socket for at least 24 hours.

      Ok Router is now re-booted.
      Should I keep Mossywell's Bounce Sky Router running?

      Re: Download Speed Collapses

      No dont run bounce while testing, if you have checked the wiring and it still disconnects you could try using mognuts to set your noise margin slightly higher maybe 8 or 9 as it is arround 6.5 if it gets near or below 6 it is likely to disconnect. Setting it higher will impact your speed slightly but may help with the disconnections and errors.
